XLT 4K FX4 on order. From what I've searched. it looks like the top of 2" square is about 19-1/2" off the ground. Need to get a (top of) ball height of 21"-22", would an insert & 2" ball to achieve this still allow the tailgate to be dropped, or would it hit the ball?

In other words, could an insert like this be used?

Thanks, HRG

I tried to get you a photo of the area you are questioning but they are all showing as too large to load.

Without going out to measure it for you (it’s 19 degrees here this morning).

Bottom line , it appears to me that it will fit with a little space to spare.

Edit: There was a thread out here from mid last year that showed a ton of measurements on the truck, and if I recall correctly this was one of them.

With a 3" drop you can comfortably lower the tailgate with a trailer hitched up.

Thanks, but with that 3" drop the top of ball will be lower than my trailer needs to run level.

Appreciate the input though, HRG

I have fx4 . I have numerous hitch bars . I checked 2 inch bar with 3/4 inch risers with 2 inch ball on it (pics) . tail gate misses ball by about 1/2 inch . trailer tongue safety latch ( pic) would hit . haven't trailered with it yet and don't know which would run level . I suspect that a couple inch drop would be needed if hitched up would be needed so tailgate doesn't hit . it also depends on the trailer tongue setup . I had a f150 and towed a rpod 16 ft travel trailer but could not open the tailgate with trailer hooked up . trailer tongue was to short . there are hitch bar extenders but I just made due .

Thanks! I'm not worried about dropping the tailgate with the trailer attached, I just didn't want to have to pull the insert if i didn't have to.

Of course, this is dependent on the length of those pesky cables, and if the 23's ship with shorter cables that allow the tailgate to lay level,,,,

guess the mid cable position has another use besides plywood for some

I just looked at mine and it should not be a problem but you can't drop it down with a trailer attached. The ball height mine is 3"s leaving like 1" to spare also depends on How far in you put the hitch😉
