In the FX4/Tremor models, the driver can manually engage 4WD. The AWD version does not have this feature. The computer will decide how much power to send to the rear wheels.

Maybe try L instead of D when selecting gears.

I think the Tremor is the only model you can lock the rears.

My AWD screen shows all four wheels with power during any start from stop.

mine as well, but I haven't looked while in tow drive mode.

This is why I really wanted the Tremor or even the FX4. I can confirm mine pulls front and rear when towing up steep hills. Also I use the AWD lock to reduce the extra wheel spin the front will get on steep climbs.

As other have said go through the instrument panel menu to find the intelligent AWD screen and watch to see what happens with the rear wheels. Mine even engage in normal modes on pavement just when hard accelerating from a stop. Yours should aswell. If they do not have a passenger record the screen in a low traction condition and take it to the dealership.

Aside from that tongue weight could be an issue. Also I would put it in slippery mode and see what happens. It should work the AWD and cut a bit of power and work the brakes a lil on the spinning tires to send power to the gripping tires. But yeah try all the modes. Tow mode to me sounds like it would probably not engage AWD any more than normal mode.

Is yours an FX4 with 4k TOW or just AWD with 4k tow?? The AWD systems apparently operate differently between those configurations.

Unfortunately, in that case it looks like you've found one of the limits in "limited off road capabilities".

Exactly. So it doesn't make the awd system work any better. The slippery modes or whatever other high traction modes you have, i'm only familiar with my Tremor, will get you more aggressive rear power transfer.

I turned on mud/ruts and sand/snow drive modes awhile back. I just used it in sand/snow, the screen shows the same if not more power directed to the rear wheels.

Me either. I've never tried pulling what I would consider close to my limit for towing up a grassy hill lol. I'm not really surprised it's slipping. The engagement is pretty slow and it could be that if it's in tow mode there is conflict in the PTU or it's reached it's limit. Lots of variables.

I wish we could see a video.

I've never tested the limits of the AWD system, but I've noticed in winter if it's not in slippery in icy/snowy conditions, it's noticeably slow to engage. The non Tremors certainly aint Subaru's

that's odd. have you looked in the intelligent awd status screen to see the torque split? it should be 50/50 anytime you start from a complete stop. but I actually don't think I've looked in tow mode.

Yes it does move power but it does so after it detects slip. Definitely could be a much faster system. I really notice it while off roading. You get that split second oh shit when the front wheels slip thinking then realize it’s not 4wd. Then the rear kicks in and it goes

I may try the icy mode when I go off-roading next.
All we need is someone to crack the rdu code. So hopefully we can lock up the clutches more. And get that ptu to push power earlier. They did it with the focus rs rdu so I’m sure someone could eventually with this system also

You'll run out of clearance and articulation before you run out of capability on the AWD.

Was about to say the same. In normal mode it’s 99% fwd, was going around the turn the other day on a wet day and started sliding a bit, don’t think the rear even kicked in. So not much confidence driving in the rain/ snow.
played around with different modes today and sport mode looks like it engages it more often, which is good to know.
Also get a lot of torque steer when accelerating from stop in normal mode which is weird as computer should probably figure out what’s going on and kick in the rear.
