Easy peasy to replace every 20,000 miles on your own.I'm convinced that some dealerships keep a dirty air/cabin filter handy, just to use it to walk in the waiting room and try to sell you a replacement.
I've tried to slow that process down, plus provide myself a reminder, by putting a label on the glove box door.

Back then it may have been purely for the benefit of the humans in the cabin, not in front of the evaporator to help it. Pretty sure my Mercury/Mazda was that way back in 80's.

but I'm about $2400 for a year with My Maverick and 91 Camaro. Although both have full coverage, glass coverage and roadside but I should look around. Want to get the Camaro on American Collectors insurance anyways but will lose my multi car discount...if what I'm paying is a discount

$300.00 per year is what American Collectors wants too. If I'm not mistaken Hagerty has a more stringent policy requiring the car to be in a garage all the time? Mine sits out in the elements all summer

I wish mine had that kind of story. I found mine burried in snow behind a shed back in 2009 and bought it for $1000 needed tires and a windshield to be road worthy but did drive it home a week later as it sat. I put it away in the winter but my aunt has sold her garage I was using 
good for her, bad for me lol but hopefully will get a shed/garage before the snow flies again

If the A/c Evaporator (in your Mav or home unit) gets too dirty air flow thru the fins is compromised, choking off efficient cooling. Meanwhile in vehicles, the heater core also resides where Evaporator is located, and winter heat can be reduced, bad situation. A clean cabin air filter is best insurance against dirt accumulation. Gaining access to Evaporator in a vehicle is time consuming hard work, translating into big $$$. I consider the cabin air filter also providing cleaner breathing air secondary to A/c efficiency.
