This video uses a Toyota minivan as the example, but at minute 51 he mentions what many in this group already know. The Ford Maverick uses the Toyota Hybrid technology. Though this video is a bit long I found it very informative, particularly the explanation of the “CVT” and how the AWD works. I recommend watching it at 1.5 speed.

Great video, thanks. I hope some of the auto techs watch this because some are misinformed. I see many posts with advice and opinions. Hope people are open minded. Great explanation and fact based.

The correct description for a very good reason.

Learned a lot watching this. Also reminded that Ford licensed the hybrid system from Toyota. Thinking out loud, will Toyota dealers work on Mavericks?
It's funny you mentioned that. For some reason recently, I have been getting emails from my local Toyota dealer about coupons to do maintenance or work on my Maverick. Both the Toyota and the Ford dealer, I made the purchase at are owned by the same people.
I haven't received anything from Frd although lve been there a lot since this purchase.
Just mentioning this because I find it hilarious, you hit home with me. I still don't understand why I get the Yota emails.

When I first got my Maverick, I was curious as to how the hybrid system works. I did some research and got my brain wrapped around it. I'm no mechanical genius, but the simplicity is quite elegant. At least for a powertrain.

A great video, excellent presentation of the operating system our trucks use, if a hybrid.

And done so in a way the unwashed masses should be able to understand. ;-)

I don't necessarily agree though, that Range Extender type vehicles are a bad idea in all situations.

A single vehicle family would be a good example where for day to day use the plug-in vehicle (I would suggest for my use case that the battery be capable of 200 miles of real range) would not need the genny-motor to run, just recharge at home every time you get home/work by plugging it in, no engine running needed.

Now for me, with the huge distances needed for getting around our beautiful country, and the extreme weather conditions of winter and summer we can experience, the range extender is a great idea. And it let's you pull off long distance travel when needed, safely.

If you are regularly trekking long distances then a hybrid like our Maverick is a good way to go, or maybe the Ecoboost...you know your use best.

But, if infrequently travelling long distance, then for me it works the way WE need it. 95% use local driving on electric power only. While on a road trip, the RE engine/generator gets used when and if needed.

Two thumbs up for this video being provided for our viewing pleasure and edification!

Ford did not license hybrid technology from Toyota. Both companies developed similar technology, and sued each other over it. After a long court battle, where both sides were found to be violating each others patents, they reached a technology sharing settlement. They shared the tech from 2008-2013, when they went different ways.

No idea why people continue to spread this nonsense.

That's also a PHEV.

Which normally isn't spec'd to give 200 miles EV only - that would be one huge battery.

But I guess if you had a very small light engine (to compensate for large battery) with enough power to provide enough electricity for low motor power demands (steady state highway), and some recharge - that might be better than HEV sized engine.

Same way he describes a PHEV is bad choice if you don't charge from home - just carrying around extra weight using it as HEV.
Carrying around bigger engine on daily EV but unused - just uses the battery more.

Yes. But model year 2005 to 2013 or whatever. Because internet blogs were saying what you said all the way back to the debut of the Escape Hybrid.

And, such a good design, it has changed very little in 21 years.

Sorry, I don't agree with that accessment. PAICE LLC claimed to create the hybrid technology. Toyota was in development and use. Ford was developing and they realized their version too closely matched Toyota's. PAICE LLC had a lawsuit against both Toyota and Ford. To avoid a lawsuit with Toyota, Ford approached Toyota and they agreed to share most of the tech. PAICE LLC eventually lost the case.

Toyota released the first hybrids in 1997, the Coaster and the Prius.
The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid uses the Toyota Hybrid drive train. They don't bother to try and hide it
Fords high voltage system is the real only thing different. They developed that.

I don’t think failure to know the whole story is the same as “spreading nonsense“. I presume you posted your response in an effort to share information that others don’t know. It can be a burden to be the smartest person in the room ✌🤛.
Thanks for your insight.

Read my previous post to get the real, whole story. You can fact check it as well.

I suppose, but I'm hardly the smartest person. It just comes up every time someone posts something about hybrid technology, or if someone asks if they should buy the hybrid or the EB, which is more often than you'd think.
