Within an inch of the edge is considered the sidewall.
The Sidewall is the "smooth", vertical area on the side of the tire between the edge of the tread and the bead of the tire, which does not include any area where tread grooves are still visible.

Clearly the pin was in the shoulder.

However,

But I would still plug it.

New vehicles do not come with road hazard warranties. When you buy your vehicle new, take it right to discount tire and buy a road hazard from them. The only thing you get in regards to tires on a new car is a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. That's it. When my mav comes in, my first stop is at discount tire for a road hazard warranty.

I cant imagine Road Hazard Warranty is worth the expense for most people unless you drive in construction sites

Find an independent tire shop. They will fix it.

Plugs are the way to go. The last set of tires I had on my truck ended up with 7 plugs before I bought new tires. Only one tire ended up with a slow leak and had to be topped off every month or so. Haven't had any problems lately. Think there was a scrapper/meth head that lived in my area that kept dropping stuff on the road. The problem seems to resolved itself.

Discount Tire is a good chain and I’ve gotten good service from them, but they are first and foremost in the business to sell tires. I’ve found them to be pretty strict on what they will repair.

Years ago when I had my Ranger I had a flat that needed to be fixed; they wouldn’t fix it because it was on the shoulder of the tire. I took it to an independent shop a half mile away and they plugged it no problem.

I generally buy the road hazard warranty when I’m getting a replacement set of tires. I’ve never thought to go in a buy a warranty on an OEM installation.

👍discount road Hazzard covered 19 tires on my 2006 RAV4. Had 3 at once one time put spare on ground (ran out of plugs) had to stack plugs in holes to fill them. Some iron apparently fell off something and got my tires! I will vote yes to carrying 20+ plugs and 12 volt inflater. Even in side wall they can get you to nearest discount tire! Anyone use discount tire certificates at tire rack since discount bought them late 2021?

Discount LOVES to sell those even if you buy tires anywhere. They will match tire prices from competitors also. Have to buy soon after OEM purchase of new vehicle check but within 30-60 days or 1-2/32" wear I think. Best to drive straight to discount when you take new car possession and swap OEM tires for better or more desired tires. They usually have waiting lists for OEM take offs and sell to new buyer with certificates. Set up trade with discount before you take possession of your new vehicle so they can have your desired tie in stock ready to go! Some managers are more generous on trade in $ than others.

Discount tire normally has a display tire with painted surfaces indicating what they will or will not repair. Their repair process is to dismount tire and patch from inside.

I buy their road hazard package free rotation, rebalance and repair. They also offer the replacement package I don't purchase that.

So far after 30 plus years of using Discount tire my experiences have been positive.

Always put questionable tires on the back. Especially with a truck . . . less weight to carry.
I would rather have a vehicle fishtail than have the front end change 2 lanes before I know anything is wrong.

The tread and the sidewall. There's not one person that would say crown or shoulder unless they're discussing uneven wear. Your diagram even explains that. Get a 295/75r22.5 and say that more than an inch in is unpatchable and a shop would laugh at that. It's only the first inch, regardless of tread pattern.

Here in Louisiana for every car I have bought so far from ford they have offered wheel and tire insurance. This is the best thing in the world. I think mine is through safeguard. It was 600 for 5 years and it covers any damage to the tire. If it can't be plugged its replaced for free. It also covers the rims. Best money I every spent. I replaced the tires on my last car at least 5 times so it paid for itself over and over again.

it's not only Discount tire. I have been refused a repair of easily fixable hole NOT in the sidewall because I drove it a few miles from my house with low pressure and they tried to convince me that would breakdown the sidewall "carcass" of the tire and they didn't want any responsibility of a major failure later. This was on a vehicle only a couple months old. Many shops will also refuse to work on any flat that you used one of the emergency canned inflater/sealers on it. I definitely prefer dismounting tire to examine inside and then patch from inside.
