BTW-

In the hybrid Maverick as long as you don't floor it, or floor it past half way, the gas engine is at high idle the whole warm up period and all the wheel torque is coming from the battery.

So yes, just get in and drive.
The engine "warm up" procedure is built in.

Another tip for outstanding MPG is never be getting 0 MPG! Never run the engine without the wheels turning!!!

With this advice, what are your numbers?
I was averaging 43 overall for the lifetime of the vehicle but I don’t always drive like this.

It’s probably going to be lower with my new heavier tires.

Is there any downside to running slippery mode all the time?

Has anyone experimented with pressing the L on the shifter? When I am coming to a red light I'll press the L and the Mav charges faster and naturally slows the Mav down quicker. I am still on my 1st tank of gas so I don't have much of a track record yet. I will definitely start using slippery mode.

Yes, but there's really no point to it.
It's the same as using the brake pedal.
It usually slows me down too quickly.
Just use your brake. It's all regen if the needle is not on the peg.

Here are some tricks I use day to day that can help you get the best MPG possible in the Hybrid.

Use the EV Coach. This screen will show you how much electric power and regen you can use. By using this feature, you can reduce the amount of time you spend with the engine on.

While eco mode is intended to be the most fuel-efficient mode, normal mode or slippery mode can actually be better depending on how you drive. I would use eco mode on long highway trips with cruise control.

Don't accelerate hard, but don't be afraid to keep up with traffic either. Your goal is to get up to speed and use electric mode until your battery needs charged.

When you are just slightly over your desired cruise speed, let off the throttle until it quickly shows “charge” and then gently apply throttle less than 10% power. It should say “electric”. Hold the throttle steady state and continue your cruise (even if you lose a little bit of speed over time) until the engine comes on. The battery charges pretty quickly, and you should be able to cruise on electric again after 20 seconds or so.

Cruise control can be less efficient than manually controlling your speed, but you can still use it to your advantage. Set the speed for 1 mph over your desired speed, and on a flat or slight downgrade, lower the speed by one, and it should automatically engage electric mode.

Generally, driving slower will help you get better gas mileage. Stay in the right lane and drive the speed limit or 5 over. Stoplight to stoplight, you'll get there in the same time as rushing, trust me.

Even if you lose a little speed up hills, try to use a steady throttle. It's pretty efficient, and you can see the engine hold get 20-25mpg up grades.

LRR tires will probably make a difference, as my heavier all terrain tires made a notable difference. Consider using lighter tires to maximize your fuel efficiency.

I hope these tips help you get the best MPG in your hybrid. Let me know if you have any other tips to share!

happy driving!
I do all those things, not religiously, but often enough.
See attached. Just passed 5000 miles. Averaging 44mpg. I'm happy.

I've been averaging 46.5 mpg on a 70-mile commute (round trip). The EV coach helped me notice that the tach staying between the 0 and 1st bar is the sweet spot. As long as the engine is not running for another reason, it will stay in electric as long as I keep the tach below the first line. I've tried medium-hard acceleration to get up to speed and then coast on electric as the OP described. Going off the theory that miles-per-gallon is just that - miles traveled either using electric or ICE. If I can get up to speed in a shorter distance and then kick into electric mode for a longer distance, that translates to better MPG. So I'm not too concerned about hard acceleration for short distances.

Slippery mode helped me as well. I can't tell a significant difference in performance by having it in slippery mode, so it works for me. Once in a while, I put it in sport and I can tell a difference but my MPG drops because the ICE is basically on the whole time.

Love my Maverick :)

Off topic slightly but I did this trip today using only sport mode.

I can attest that the ACC in eco mode for road trips is the best. I recently came back from a work trip 260 miles round trip and let the ACC do 95% of the driving at 70 mph. The other 5% was surface streets. Averaged 44 mpg.

Good tips to squeeze out more miles. In town flat 2 mile trip to the store can be accomplished at over 100 mpg.

Its interesting to learn that the best way to run when the ICE is on is to go ahead and get it up to speed. I definitely think I have been accelerating way to slow when on the ICE motor. One other thing, watch EV coach is great, but you can get better mileage by making sure you are also paying attention to terrain. EV coach doesn't know the up/down hills ahead, so it may very well serve you best to build some speed so you can coast for much longer.
