Not a misunderstanding, but more of a disappointment. I was surprised when I realized that the XLT Lux I was leaning towards has an actual key you have to insert and turn to start the truck.

No push button start unless you get the Lariat.

I've seen several posts here where people say they thought they were getting "X" but they got or just learned that they get "Y". This applies to people who ordered a Maverick as well as bought off the dealers lot.

Examples I've seen include -

I thought the XL had cruise control
I thought the Maverick had a CD player
I thought the Maverick had built in navigation
I thought the XLT had Sirius XM
I thought the Lariat without Lux had active cruise control
I thought my hybrid got a full size spare without buying copilot 360
I thought the full size spare option was the same size as the other 4 tires

There's probably more, but these are what I can recall right now.

The question is how does this happen?

Is Ford's online information not clear enough? It does take some digging, that's for sure.

Are the dealership sales people not doing a good job of learning everything the customer wants and explaining the options and or packages required to get them? There are some poor sales people out there unfortunately.

Is the customer not doing their due diligence before handing out $20-30K or more?

I thought I had done good research and I did know all of the above except I learned about the faux full size spare tire here on this forum.

How can this lack of information in the age of information that we live in be improved?

I'd say some improvement of complete (and correct) information on the Ford build and price website would benefit the most.

What say you?
I finally figured out what they were trying to disclose by "full size spare" in that of All the spares this one is the biggest and is the fullest of them.

Caveat emptor. You're spending tens of thousands on this truck. Make sure you know what you're doing before your buy is entered into the system.

Does the dealership or employee screw up? Absolutely. It's still on you to make sure you're getting exactly what you want.

I did my research back in June and pretty much understood the packages and options in short order, it just takes some deep perusing of the available documentation.

I didn't find myself surprised, but throughout the waiting, I did change my order to the XLT from the Lariat. As for keyless start, I have two vehicles, one with and one without, and drive them interchangeably without giving it a thought.

As for the OP's original question, buyers fall into several categories. Some want to be sold vehicles by a salesman, some prefer to watch YouTube reviews ad nasuem, relying on many folks that just want clicks, likes, and subscribes. And some deep dive and research all outlets.

It never hurts to be well informed and take a bit of time to understand what you're buying, it is a significant outlay.

Wow, never thought they lasted that long!
96,000 miles. Looks and runs like new. Not that I haven't had to put money in it now and again. Nothing crazy though.

I feel as if it is a lack of consumer knowledge and laziness in not doing research. That being said - I did not order until after the first drives and reviews came out so the very earliest orders were probably at the mercy of dealer knowledge and/or limited knowledge on here.

The biggest surprise for me (and it was a positive) is that the CP360 package on the XL model adds power mirrors. That's a big bonus.

I also learned that it doesn't matter if you have CP360 or not - the rear view mirror is positioned ridiculously low - but I didn't notice during the test drive in a non-CP360 Mav so I am sure that I am good there.

Other than that - I haven't been surprised and don't really see any major surprises coming down the line either.

Was referring to the CD player. Vw does put out a good product, had a 63 wagon and later a Golf.

Ah, since I never used the CD player, I can't vouch that it still works. Guess I'm assuming 😆

The CD question I can answer. When you look at the dash area, it looks like there is a CD slot there. When I first saw it, I wondered why any new vehicle would include on anymore. I wasn't the only one. On several sites, there were people asking if that was a CD slot.
And that cubby next to the flat screen was a CD Holder, isn't that what it's for?

Since most of us are old timers, we need to remember that the Maverick has been targeted at younger buyers. So no CD player or XM (ancient tech), no Homelink (because the target buyer doesn't own a home), no navigation (because the kids will just use CarPlay), etc, etc.

When was the last time a manufacturer put a cd player in a car? 1998?
My 2016 Escape had one. I'm not sure if my 2018 has one. I've never used it if it does.
