As soon as I saw it was from Jalopnik, I should've known it was garbage. The Maverick is nowhere near "embarrassing." It's been a smash hit ever since day one. The refresh may not be the best received but chances are Ford will still sell everyone they make, it'll just take longer. I'm not even gonna bother to read the article with a title like that. They can suck it!
I'll help you out. it doesn't say that it's embarrassing to own/drive. it says something else entirely.

What I find more offensive is the OP posting it with no context.

Two things made me choose the Maverick as a vehicle to replace my aging 2010 Ford Focus. First it is available with hybrid AWD. Second and really most important to me, it is not another SUV clone car.

No other automaker would be willing to cost cut their vehicle to oblivion like Ford to get the Maverick to that $19,995 price point in 2022. That's why no one else is building compact unibody pickups for the US.

I think the majority of us understood that, it’s just that it would be a hell of a lot more successful without its problems such as too many recalls! But then what automaker doesn’t deal with that nowadays? Word of mouth sells. Are you having any problems with your new Maverick? Hmm, ahh, maybe just a little.
I have one of the first 2022 Mavericks built and have 34K miles. Not one single issue. That said, I have not had any recalls performed because my truck has no symptoms and I feel sometimes recalls create problems rather than solve them. This happened to my Jeep Grand Cherokee several years ago.

Why aren't other automakers making a SUV with a bed? Low profit margins that's why. Ford made the Maverick to keep their EPA fleet numbers in such a way that they can sell more F-150s and heavy duty trucks. A lot of other automakers still sell cars, which solves that problem for them.
No disagreement there. But, I do believe today's Maverick owner is Ford's future customer again too. Quite likely, a truck customer and that's where the money is.

And that's what I went off of. So, the OP is to blame. Typical clickbait. Well, I can safely say they got what they wanted. People are talking about it. And I fell for it.

I've had some neighbors make some snide comments about my Maverick. I think it's rooted in jealousy. Sure, it doesn't come close to their full size trucks' capacities. But like most, they hardly ever use them. I think what irritates them most is I have 2 brand new vehicles, one being a truck and another being a sports car, and those total MSRPs together are right around the single MSRPs of their trucks alone.
I will say this...

I use my Maverick in more truck duties than many who have larger trucks. I regularly tow 2000+lbs, haul half yards of sand in the bed, transport lumber and outdoor power equipment. My thought is if I do more "truck stuff" than the average truck owner with my Maverick then most every other truck owner is likely overbuying. That's their choice of course.

Well nobody seems to have read the short story, dumb as it is. He says it’s embarrasssing to other automakers because the Maverick is such a huge success. He is NOT saying the vehicle is embarrassing to own, on the contrary.

Yes! As in an embarassment of riches for FoMoCo who is cleaning up. I'm sure the Mav is taking a few sales from Ranger. But it is also pulling buyers from other brands to Ford. I am a first time Ford customer. Before the Mav, I never owned a Ford product, new or used.

When Ford basically stopped making cars, I swore I'd never buy another Ford. Partly because I thought it was a stupid idea (and stupidity should not be rewarded) but also because I could never see myself needing a truck, given the compromises (sheer size, poor fuel ecomony, cost) it would require. The Maverick changed my mind, and I now have an XLT AWD hybrid coming soon. Not my first truck, and not my first Ford, but a surprise nonetheless. And a win for Ford that I never thought they'd get -- from me. So maybe other car companies should be embarrassed.

 Why is the OP to blame?

They aren't saying the Maverick is embarrassing to owners. It is to the other auto makers that aren't releasing a version.

I have a hybrid and feel the same way. Had them check the wiper motor recall and mine was not affected by it. I do get the drive your veicle message to update my Ford pass features. Though after driving it still says for me to drive my vehicle. Knock on wood it has always started up. I have the dash illumination, back up camera, turn signal and the taillight recalls I have not had performed. I have not had any issues with those yet. Hopefully I don't.

Toyota is supposed to have a Corolla Truck in 2025. The problem is the huge markups on mid and full size pickups. There is more profit in these larger trucks. Car manufacturers are not interested in how many vehicles they can sell, they are interested in how much profit they can make.

I traded a Rav4 in on my Mav. Most people I know who have Mavs previous vehicles were SUV’s.

Simply put...I've owned 67 and 69 T-Birds customized both...Special ordered 84 Jeep CJ 7 Laredo Black with Nutmeg Colored Hardtop, leather interior..3 inch lift I added and it was a beauty..Point is that I truly enjoy my Maverick as much as I enjoyed my best vehicles back in them day
