The following event Kinda ruined the evening, certainly added an unpleasant aroma (that eventually dissipated) to the interior.

Was fueling at a station that’s the official fuel of NASCAR last night after an 8-hour run from HHI. Began the process, slowest hands-free speed the nozzle would allow (like usual) and freaked out when fuel began gushing/flowing out the top. Damn nozzle never clicked off! Ugh.

Caught it quickly, maybe the equivalent of a Starbucks Grande splattered the pavement. She-who-must-be-obeyed, always observant and sarcastic, piled on with “Have a problem?”. Lovely.

I looked for a cat litter bucket (nope) and then informed the only employee, who said “don’t worry about it, happens a lot “. Not sure which troubled me more, his nonchalance or the fact it had happened before. Wow.

Wiped what I could off the truck, parked it overnight and ran another 7 hours today with no apparent issues. But it wasn’t a warm-and-fuzzy evening…

Adopting an ‘even more vigilant’ approach from here forward. Ugh.

I learned a long time ago. When we were allowed to pump our own gas.
To never ever use the slowest setting on a nozzle. At times there is insufficient pressure to activate the auto shutoff.
Because of the chance of this happening. I Never lock the nozzle on the slowest setting.

I started buying my own gas back when Montgomery Ward had service centers with gas pumps and gas was 0.27 cents a gallon.

Same, at Costco in MSP - has not happened before - seemed the fuel rate of flow was too slow to cause an automatic pump shut off. I have used their pumps multiple times without issue - other than that I have no idea what caused it

Truck should be fine. Though you paid for gas that spilled on the ground. But the guy at the station really should have taken an interest in the issue and maybe flagged that pump as defective, with a bag over the nozzle. because if it happened to you, it's happening to others. Defective nozzle needs to be replaced.

Not meant to add intrigue, but…

…there were times in years past that a squishy tennis ball was used at stations w/o the auto lever. Fit perfectly in the handle, allowing time to simultaneously clean the windshield and rear deck. Clicked off as intended w/o incident.

Last century = different time.

Also in another time, the gas cap often fit well enough to ‘auto’ fill.

Fast forward to the current trend of no more gas caps.

Progress?

I was filling up in the Dallas area several years ago. They have the rubber shrouds that collect gasoline fumes. My pump did not cut off when it should have. When I cut it off and removed the nozzle at least 2 gallons of gas came shooting out all over me, my truck, and the drive. The "attendant" was absolutely no help. There was no soap in the restroom. I spent the next 8 hours driving home smelling like 87 octane!

Not sure where Montgomery Ward came in, but it was one of my first credit cards, too. Part of the mall triple crown, Wards, Sears, and Penneys.

I remember those days; used to use the gas cap itself or whatever you could find to wedge in there 😂
Had a gas overflow about 2 weeks ago - about 62 cents worth. 🤷‍♀️

The gas stations here in Ontario do not have the auto lever so you have to squeeze the handle til done.
Yup, as far as I am aware the auto lever is not legal in Canada, and hasn't been for a long time. I know a few stations with really old pumps still have it though.
