I can get into the bed with the tailgate down, it would just be so much easier if there was a aftermarket step option or better yet a built-in one from the factory.

there is - a 2 step little aluminum ladder - cheap to buy and doesn't take up much space

Agreed, I'm 6'1" and 46. Getting up into the bed isn't getting any easier.

I use the Hitchmate. Extends for use when the tailgate is down.
Caveats - do not use if prone to shin cracking. It extends beyond the bumper about 3" when folded.
Keep it locked. Everyone wants to steal it.

As far as I can tell GM holds the patents for several designs of the corner step bumper.

Possibly why on the Ranger, Ford can only offer a step that is positioned between the rear wheel and in front of the bumper. Which does not infringe on GM patents. Nothing Ford can do.
Pretty much moot, until the GM patients expire.
All that is left are workarounds. Like step stools, hitch mounted shin busting steps, ladders mounted to the tailgate that fold down.

1. Which size did you install?
2. Does it interfere with cables?
3. Could you still carry plywood with the tailgate at the mid-way position?

I used the one priced at $70.90, it was designed to fit the Maverick. It does not interfere with the cables and I also have the tailgate assist pneumatic damper. No problems there. I have not hauled any plywood sheets so I can't answer that question.
