Actual experts would not recomend that. You end up focusing all that force in the middle of the pin which will cause it to bend leaving it stuck in the vehicle rendering the hitch useless. Get a hitch mounted shackle instead.Experts suggest keeping the pin in hitch receiver to use as a tow strap attachment point . Haven't done it yet . Seems like aidea though .
These may not be the correct numbers but 4000lbs in the middle of the pin can bend it whereas a something designed for a receiver changes the bending force in 1 point to shearing force to 2 points. To shear a 5/8 pin in two places it requires upwards of 40,000lbs of force.
