Who at Ford came up with auto start to save gas and yet AC runs with AC light off. It appears AC runs based temp setting and not the AC button!

It runs based upon relative humidity and dew point temperature. To reduce chance of condensate fogging windshield as well as to prevent dew from forming on electrical things under dash. Most of time it's using air flow at foot level and under dash. When close enough to dew point it will turn on AC condenser and use the windshield and side window vents to lower humidity. If cab temp is at or below dew point all vents and air speed will be used along with AC condenser!
This can happen on a sunny day if you have several passengers panting in your maverick.

Are you speaking as an informed authority? Or that's what you believe?

Is this a typical operating mode for new vehicles? I'm accustomed to AC on or off, not this says it off but is still running!
You can select on, off, automatic. When off is selected it will do very little and not get cabin to set temp. Personally I would like to set heat to something like on at 60 or below and cool on to maybe 76 or higher so automatic would not run between those settings. That way humidity control could operate more freely than it does in the off setting.
I also would like to have my Adaptive Cruise Control to have a minimum and a maximum speed setting where computer could play with a range of Regen or Coast whichever is better mpg. But it does a good job holding a set speed and the range option would create road rage in traffic so it's best to pulse uphill and glide downhill in slippery mode. Remember you can push the "L" button at any speed so you can increase Regen while gliding if you want to not coast as fast and then you could set cruise to a desired speed when engine braking starts That would allow computer to determine how much hydraulic brake is needed and balance with engine braking.

Did you push in the left knob to turn off the auto temp control?

I'm used to personal control with a lot of things "on/off" like the lights, the engine, the parking brake, etc.

And, how many drops of gasoline does it save shutting off the engine for a few seconds at the light.

Probably my hvb soc dropped to its restart ice point but mine seems to restart after about 45 seconds every time I have measured on my hybrid. So I wonder why restart needs to happen in no more than that time???

I'm on my phone, so don't have the link to the study handy. But they found that the break even point was about 10 seconds of idle time equated to the gas needed to start the engine. So any time you are stopped for 10 seconds or more it makes sense for the engine to shut off to save gas.

Not an issue with the Hybrid. The gasoline engine will shut off when coasting to a red light and often stay off, even when you start back up, unless you stomp the go pedal.

Exceptions are if you're running the air or heat, either of which can make the gasoline engine run at times, depending on battery charge, HVAC temp setting and outdoor temperature.

Now that I have a hybrid it's not nearly as annoying.

Since I don't race up to stop lights usually it's less than that. Balanced by the cost of a starter, betcha it's a lot these days.
