Oof, that sucks.

My '23 hybrid was also the victim of hail. We had some severe weather roll through eastern New Mexico/western Texas at the end of May. My poor Maverick was outside at work. The entire driver's side, roof and hood took a beating. It broke the front driver's side window deflector.

I made a claim on my insurance and took it to one of the better PDR shops in town.

I was kinda shocked how much the estimate was:

The owner of the body shop said the hood was so messed up that it would be more cost effective to just replace it.

Hail sucks!

If they want to total it I would be happy. Get your money back then go to the auction and buy it back super cheap. My mother once got hit and the tow truck towed it to a snow bank on our property. The insurance adjuster didn't want to lie in the show so he walked around it and marked it as a total. Got paid in full then dad bought the wreck back for $600, fixed it for 3K and had a paid off car. I would take the money, buy the "wreck" and just keep it dented until Mavericks start popping up in junk yards so you can buy the hood and fenders cheap.

Dang hail. I would buy 1000 shares of Ford stock and couple cans bondo and touchup rattle cans of OEM matching paint to blend the spots in and drive the "truck". Maybe some peel and stick "pasties" shaped like eyes or flames or (?)

Edit to add: Hey find a high school kid that face paints and just have a custom hand painted vehicle. Might cost $2500 though?

I'd parked my car at the Calgary airport to go on a much needed vacation and came back to discover my truck had been pounded by a horrible hailstorm. After 4 hours on hold I finally got a claim started and now I'm playing the waiting game to get a damage estimate so I can find out whether insurance will cover repairs, total the truck or just hand me a cheque and tell me to get lost while they deal with the tens of thousands of other claims from this storm.
I FINALLY got the stereo installed and most of the smaller mods knocked off my list so this timing really sucks.

The hood is gone, roof is pretty bad and there are dings all over the upper half of the left side, front fender to the taillight, right fender has dings all over the top edge too.
Pardon the crappy videos, I was filming in the garage late at night after a few frosty adult beverages.

Man, LET US KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!!! In Texas, they would just total the vehicle.

Haha. I'll let insurance pay for it since I've been with the same carrier for 22 years. They can use some of the thousands of dollars I've paid to them over the years to repair it.

But, eventually, I'd like to wrap the cab in gloss black vinyl.

Take the money and run, put it in the bank to cover the next vehicle or if you're making payments pay it off, drive it until the wheels fall off.

It may be the video but that isn't actually horrible for what hail damage can be, I don't see it being totaled. Expensive? Yup! Totaled? Shouldn't be.
I was bored and puttering around the garage on Sunday and a buddy came by to view the devastation so we started counting dents.
We started at the driver's front fender and ignored the hood, by the time we hit the end of the driver's door we were over 100 dents. I gave up at that point but he kept counting, not sure how many he found but it was well over 150.

The hood is literally hundreds, the dents have dents and the roof is a little better, thanks to the big stiffening ridges stamped in, but it's still pretty wavy.

So sorry about this. Gad, what a shock for you when you got back! Can't imagine what the hail would do to anybody who was caught in it. I hope you get your truck back to "normal" sooner than later.
Thanks, it was apparently pretty brutal storm with golf ball sized hail and real nasty driving wind. Being outside would be very hazardous indeed, a friend was caught in a similar storm years ago and had huge raised welts.

Exactly. A lot of people on this site act like they're driving a show truck, or some SEMA build.

Unless it affects functionality, hold onto the money. Maybe find a hood, have it resprayed. PDR is not cheap.
If you want to drive a beater that's fine, I'm not judging because I like crusty old junk trucks too :) Got a beastly old '91 Toyota 1 ton in the garage beside Valentina.
But personally, I bought a new truck because I like a new truck so I'd rather my $40k investment looks good for as long as it can.

Oof... really takes the pep out of that HPR.

I guess it depends on what the insurance does, but I'd rather not drive a bumpy truck. A ding, a scratch, normal wear and tear or even an "oopsie"... but not an entire vehicle ruined by hail damage. Especially one in a color as hot as HPR. That color is designed to be flashy and shine.
Thanks, I'm of the same mind. I didn't buy a shiny new red truck so I could drive around in a dented up junkwagon. I wouldn't lose it over a door ding or scuff but this has really taken the wind out of my sails.
I'm waiting to see what insurance says but I know a few guys in the paint and body business and they've given informal estimates of $20-35,000.
I paid $40,600 for the thing so if the quote is anywhere near $30k I don't know what insurance will do, logically they should total it out but they seem to treat hail pretty weird up here in Canada.

If they do PDR, make sure you inspect the interior when they are done. We had an Impreza get caught in hail about 5 years ago and had PDR via insurance. The interior and trunk panels were all eff'd up.
Good looking out, thanks. I've never had to have PDR done so if it comes down to that I'll be extra careful in reviewing where I take it for the work.

THAT sucks
that said have you a dent doctor near you?
I had some work done from them & they are magic
mind you it will take a bit of time but may be worth it & if they can get it done t wont go on carfax
this is just one I pulled up in the area

https://dentrisers.com/
I appreciate the link but there are 150+ dents on the left side of the truck and hundreds on the hood and roof, the cost for PDR would eat me alive.

Sorry to say but thats totaled. This is the options the insurance will have but they tend not to say. Pay you and the loan off . They forget to tell you that you can buy back the truck with a rebuilt tittle from them with a substaintial savings if you don't mind all the dings, just something to consider I have been there before and bought out the vehicles , as stated if you can live with the dings,
You may be right, I guess I'll see what they say. Insurance companies here in Canada seem to be pretty weird about people directly buying back totaled vehicles, I asked on my previous car and they just said "no, we don't do that" and sent it to auction where I missed buying it due to technical issues. It sold for pocket change!

I did so many of these claims it made me sick, you have to realize the insurance companies are swamped with calls and the appraisers can only do maybe 5/6 claims a day, I set up in a hospital parking lot for 3/4 days because that area got pounded with vehicles there was 4 of us and did 10 cars a day, in a case like this most company's bring in appraiser's from across the USA. when you have all the cars in one place it saves so much time. Am retired now and most companies are using PRO shops to write their own estimates and am sure there swamped too.
As for your damage the hood and fenders are easy to replace, the problem is the roof replacing the roof is costly, if it needs to be replaced, there is also paintless dent repair, the rear quarters are bolt on panels on the Maverick so they're not a big problem. It sounds like the whole vehicle will need to be painted, so it may be in your best interest to total the vehicle if they want to, if its fixed you will lose a lot money on a trade-in or any sale it will be reported the vehicle has been damaged. There are Mavericks on dealers lots now you should be able to find one or maybe get a 2025 that has a lot of upgrades...Good luck. Keep in mind if they total the vehicle and you buy it they will deduct the salvage value which will likely high on the maverick and in most states get a salvage title.
Yessir, I get it :) There are literally tens of thousands of claims being filed due to this storm and since my truck is drivable, I know I'm down their priority list.
I do want things to move forward but I'm not about to start calling and harassing them when they're already swamped with normal collisions.

WOW, $11,000 for that? Was the whole truck hit similar to the damage on the hood?

For sure, I'll keep posting updates as things develop.

Take the money and run, put it in the bank to cover the next vehicle or if you're making payments pay it off, drive it until the wheels fall off.
The truck was $40,600 and I tossed about $32,000 on it at delivery so I don't have a huge amount owing.
If insurance does write it off, or hands me a substantial cheque for damage I'll be sticking a decent amount back in my pocket.

Yeah, basically the entire driver's side of the truck and the roof looks like the hood. It even broke the tail light on the driver's side.

The body shop wants to replace the tonneau cover but it only has one tiny ding that's barely visible. They quoted $1200 for the replacement cost but I don't see the need to replace it for that one tiny ding.

The body shop just placed the value on the damage. It is proof of what the insurance owes for. You can keep the $1200 and the tonneau cover. The insurance owes because that dent cannot be repaired.
