Suggestions needed for when to do first oil change~~~~ I've seen comments from 500 miles to 10,000 for doing 1st oil change. And should I ask dealer to use Full Synthetic instead of Synthetic Blend?
In my earlier years I would do my own oil changes to make sure the drain plug was in tight enough & filter was actually changed, etc. Now I see that there is a big panel/shield that has to be removed to even get to drain plug& filter; and I'm older and more feeble so doing it myself isn't as much fun. And I sense future warranty issues if I don't have dealer's records to prove that oil changes have occurred during warranty period. Any advice is appreciated. I'm at 1,020 miles so it's time to consider the 1st oil change .

The hybrid uses full synthetic only, and the synthetic blend is only suitable for temporary use or for the EB engine. The details of the Ford oil requirement seem to be identical to the European Ilsac GF6a spec. Only some oils meet the new lower volatility and better wear protection specs that Ford requires. I have 9800km on mine with the oil life monitor saying 48% remaining on the original factory oil. The oil looks like brand new with no perceptible darkening, metal particles or anything. All these people are freaking out on this site about changing it religiously every 5,000km and I think I'm going to go by what the monitor tells me and change the oil at what looks to be about 18,000km at the end of the year. Its not 1940-quality oil anymore...

I am not saying what I did is right, but I haven't had any issues. I got my first oil change 45 days and 3,500 miles after taking delivery. When I changed it the oil still looked good. I have continued to try and stay below the 10,000 mile recommended oil change interval and I utilized synthetic oil. I currently have 35,000 and have changed my oil 6 times.

Hybrid engines will not run all the time like regular ICE's do. Oil life will be somewhat higher. I will change mine when the computer says to. When I had my 2015 Prius, I changed mine every 5k at first, then after seeing how clean the oil was, went to around 8k. If I had a regular ICE, I would do it around 6k and feel safe. Todays oils are better than 20-30 years ago.

Changed mine myself at 5k. Put a larger capacity filter on that I found from one of the threads on this forum.

Yeah, the first change is important and should be done sooner than the regular change interval, but I agree that it's not as dire as engines from yesteryear.

I own a couple of 70s vehicles where I've had the cast iron engines rebuilt and broken in on an engine dyno and the oil gets changed immediately after the dyno break in and all the power pulls. The main reason for that is to make sure nothing catastrophic has occured, like wiping cam lobs on a flat tappet cam.

After that, it's whatever interval I feel comfortable with, but those engines are still 70s tech with far looser tolerances than this new stuff and much heavier engine oil get used (10w40). I don't think my 5k first change is gonna make my hybrid 4 banger die sooner than later.

Only thing I have to offer is synthetic blend is a waste of money. From what I've read they charge basically a split the difference between regular and full synthetic but it's probably like 80% regular oil.

I’ve heard variations of the same sort of thing. Blends seem to often be pointless because it ends up having most of the same qualities regular oil would have. Synthetic is great because it has such high consistency as a material, and you lose that with the blend.

I think Ford recommends 7-10k miles. I ended up doing mine at just over 6k miles, mainly because I was getting close to 6 months. I was at about 20% oil life according to the oil life monitor. IMO every 5-7k miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first.

To remove most of the break-in particles from the engine oil circulation circuit I would recommend changing the factory oil after 1,000-2,000 miles, which is when the main break-in has already happened. I did my hybrid at 1,600 miles.

I stick to a roughly 6,500 mile interval thereafter. I don't think those much longer intervals are good for any engine.

Also: I'll change the transaxle fluid somewhere in the 50k-60k range (i.e. soon in my case). This is about as simple as an engine oil change. We have had Toyota hybrids for years and after changing the transaxle fluid you can actually notice the difference. These fluids don't last and perform as long as people seem to think.

On my ecoboost maverick I got the first oil change at 7,500 miles and I will get the rest at 5,000 miles
