Well, this has now happened to me three times in a row, and quite honestly I wish Ford would give us something solid to go off of, especially for those of us who don't have the luxury of dropping off the truck for an extended period of time at a Ford dealer.

So, the symptoms - start driving, and the truck suddenly throws a barrage of errors - ESC fails, gear selection at low speed message, hill assist disable, pre-collision assist disabled, ABS light is on, MIL is on, service wrench is on, and drive mode selection is disabled. Might be something else in there that's disabled, but you get the gist. Truck loses all response to gas pedal, slows down and then slams on the parking brake at like 1-2 mph. Taking the parking brake off, you have no gas pedal input and the truck just accelerates up to 30-35 mph (don't know the exact number, because every time this has happened to be the speed limit was 30 or less so I ended up just riding the brakes to keep the speed down).

The only benefit here, and why I'm also making this post, is to share that there is a bit of a workaround so you're not completely stranded in a garbage situation. And we'll get to that here in a minute.

At least with the fail this time I had my laptop with me, so fired up FORScan and managed to get a complete system read of all the failures in real time. So here's the fail right after it happened (luckily I was in a parking lot, so was able to pull immediately over into some open spots):

Well, that sucks, especially with 15 miles of 60 mph country road ahead of me. But, still have a couple of errands to run, so let's just reset the codes and see if it comes back. This drive is going to suck, but I don't have the luxury of just sitting and waiting or going straight to a dealer. Gotta get the groceries. Drive a quarter mile over to the commissary, park up and get my shopping out of the way. So what happened? Only thing that comes to mind is that the truck sat long enough that it all of the systems were able to be properly power cycled, since turning the truck off with the key doesn't actually turn the truck off right away. Reset the codes again, and this time nothing came back, code read was completely clean, MIL off, and everything was perfectly fine. Got home no issues, and then proceeded on a 150mi drive to the airport without any problems.

So what's the takeaway? If you get this fail, get somewhere safe, turn the truck off for 5-10 minutes, then proceed on your way. Obviously there's a problem, but at least you don't need to be stuck in limp mode the whole time.

I am shocked there isn't a recall for the recall or any type of acknowledgement from Ford regarding this issue.

Someone somewhere said they released a update last week but no further details and it was likely a dealer telling someone that just to tell them it was "fixed".

My 2023 Hybrid XL (16,927 miles) was hit with the same error earlier today. Three weeks after having the BCM recall completed.

One week after the recall service I noticed a squeak when the vehicle switched from battery to ICE. A few hard stops were also noticed.

Dealer will look at it Wednesday. Troublesome, as this is my work vehicle.

The same thing happened to me yesterday! Had the recalls done 3 weeks ago.

I was just a few blocks from home so I pulled over and restarted after 5 minutes. Truck was fine except for the check engine light. The app had the the active alerts.

I figured I'd call the dealer after I got to work today. Started up and still had the check engine light. Got to work and had to put off calling the dealer.

When I went to get lunch the engine light was gone. Checked the app and it was clean, no alerts at all.

I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it'd help Ford come up with a fix.

This may be way off, but came to my mind after reading through the printouts of errors that FORScan produced. These trucks (and most other modern vehicles) have multiple computer systems that communicate to each other. Looks like a major breakdown in communication is happening between at least a couple of systems. Maybe a loose or faulty connector somewhere? I have also seen online where a truck (in this case a 2022 Doge Ram 1500) would run for approx 20 min and then go into limp mode and pretty much disable the truck. Wait a period of time and the truck would start up and run fine, for another 20 min then do the same thing. Through days of troubleshooting the mechanic discovered there was a faulty connector between the BCM and ECU. This particular connector had a tiny resister for each pin in the plug. After 20 minutes the resister on one of the pins in the plug from the BCM was overheating and malfunctioning. The faulty resister was causing "data" not to be transferred on that one wire. That's all it took to disable the entire vehicle after 20 minutes of driving. Have no idea if any of the connectors in the Maverick have resisters?? Just thinking outside the box. If anything it appears that the recall update for the BCM is affecting hybrids way more and possibly corrupting data that the different systems use to communicate.

I posted that I got an updated update. My truck sat at the dealer for four weeks too while they worked with big F to figure it out.

Well, this has now happened to me three times in a row, and quite honestly I wish Ford would give us something solid to go off of, especially for those of us who don't have the luxury of dropping off the truck for an extended period of time at a Ford dealer.

So what's the takeaway? If you get this fail, get somewhere safe, turn the truck off for 5-10 minutes, then proceed on your way. Obviously there's a problem, but at least you don't need to be stuck in limp mode the whole time.
Sorry this is happening to you but thanks for sharing your experiences and the advice on the 5-10 minute power cycle.

I am taking my Mav in for a warranty claim on two weeks to fix my broken spare tire winch. I put in the service request and going to insist my Service Rep write NO RECALLS in the service notes. If they insist on the recalls I’m driving off to deal with the winch another day.

Wow . . . just wow! Thank you for turning a negative (and frightening) experience into useful information. You've probably done more then the entire Ford organization to document the problem. I would guess your FORScan readouts would be of some help to any Ford techs who have any interest in solving this problem. I see a big time lawsuit if someone gets injured due to this.

I've thought about the faulty connection angle before, but the logic for it doesn't really work out. Of the 3 times I've gotten this fail, all three were effectively with a "cold" truck. First fail, got maybe a tenth of a mile outside of work (accelerating after a stop). Second fail, hadn't driven the truck at all that day, pops 100 yards away from the house. Third fail, drove a mile from work to the post office no issue, then it pops after I got back in the truck and started to drive out of the parking spot. Between (and after this last fail), multiple long distance drives over some rough roads, so anything physical should pop up more than it does. My daily commute is a 30 mile round trip over roads that have been beat up by the local farm traffic, so it's definitely not kind on the suspension. Figure with that kind of abuse if there was a wiring issue it'd make itself known pretty quick. This all makes me think that the problem is software based, the question just comes down to what's the combination of inputs happening that's causing the ECU/PCM to crash?

@Ford Motor Company if y'all have any insight or want to chime in on this, would love to hear from you guys. This mystery limp mode activation is starting to become a bit of a black eye for the hybrid Mavs, and I'm sure no one wants "plagued by software issues" attached to what's actually a pretty decent truck.

Yea the way the limp mode kicks in concerns me greatly. With Ford being mute on this issue figured I might as well contribute something constructive to the conversation seeing as how I have a somewhat vested interest. I'm just lucky in that I've never had this happen in traffic or at any kind of speed, unlike some other members here. But because of this, my wife is scared to drive the truck in case it pops on her and she would rather tempt fate in her old Mini Cooper that needs to go into the shop every other month for some new mechanical defect.
