I had an event on my way to work last Friday… I’m driving along and get a message all of Sudden that the truck will change to the selected gear once I reach an appropriate speed. I had no accelerator pedal, and the truck would just coast, I was in the center lane of 3 in my direction. Fortunately I was right at a rest area and was able to stop. Unfortunately I got to see the guys at the Ford dealer and pay for a $380 tow (submitted for reimbursement)…

I’m throwing in the towel. I asked f for the dealer to get me an appraisal on it, and they came in high enough to make it worth it for me. My 2022 XLT hybrid is still in the shop waiting on parts and I have a loaner until I get my new (to me) F150 all signed for.

The dealer is great, they do exactly what they should for the customer. But I think Covid killed the training that Ford corporate needed to make their trucks at a high caliber. Maybe not just for them, but also for their tower 2 and 3 suppliers…

I've had more than a few vehicles over the years that caused me to lose all level of confidence in. When that feeling strikes, there is only one solution. Get rid of it and get rid of now. Getting in and turning the key at 5AM, cold and snowing and wondering if the rig is going to get you to work is never a feeling I was willing to live with.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that. Can't say I totally disagree with you. Hopefully your new truck will not have issues.

Is it a pre-covid model?

When my wife and I were newly married (1995) I traded in my 93 Jetta (5spd she couldn't drive it) for a , wait for it, 1995 Dodge Neon Sport so that my wife had a reliable car for her work commute. I inherited her grandpa handmedown (early model Olds 98).. At that point in my life I had already owned 12 cars and had never owned a domestic (Ford, Chrysler, GM) car. So, working in manufacturing and feeling proud of what 'North American Know-How' could do... I decided to give Chrysler a chance on a domestically produced compact car.

We knew within 3 months it was a mistake. That automobile not only broke down frequently, but sometimes in a very scary fashion (like the rear brakes completely locking up when tapping them to disengage the cruise control on an interstate, resulting in a spin). We were young and broke... and counting the days until we were no longer upside down on the thing... Just no confidence that the thing was going to operate correctly and get my wife to her job consistently. Traded In for a super reliable 1996 Honda Civic EX purchased new from Mohawk Honda in Schenectday NY. We had that lovely car for almost 8 years (a friend hit a deer with it in the Adirondack Mountains at high speed and destroyed it).

Sometimes you just know. I wanted America to produce a compact car that I could drive confidently. It wasn't to be. At that point in my life I knew Hondas, Volkswagens, Volvos, and SAABs.... and I went back to the more reliable of the 4.

I know, long story, but fully appreciate you not having confidence in your vehicle... And you need to have that living in the Finger Lakes (I lived in many places in the world, and I consider the Finger Lakes an absolute undiscovered and underestimated gem... Good on you for living there!). My wife and a dear friend, the Reading Room B&B, on Seneca Lake, so many years ago.

Similar story here, with an early January 2022 build. Only difference is that you maintained confidence in the brand and dealership, which is great. I wish my Maverick's issues would have been handled better. Congrats on the new F-150!

Congrats on the F-150! Lots of hybrids over the past few weeks giving up the ghost randomly and Ford saying they see no issues when people bring them in.... I have my fingers crossed. I have not done any of the software updates yet and will hold off for now...

Just keep in mind the OP drives close to 40,000 miles annually, which is at least 3x the national average. I thought my 14k/yr was high.

1st year production, very severe duty, IMO. Doesn't sound like the norm or a recipe for success. The Mav failed, but a lot was asked.

Lets face it - from an outside view - these dying hybrids have nothing to do with miles driven, 1st year production or anything else - The constant manipulation of software seems to be the demise. .. just thinking out of the box - Doesn't it bother anyone that at any time someone can reach into your truck and mess it up - let alone shut it down at their whim .... Progress - it isn't all good imo

Cheers

The first sign that my hybrid is going down this type of road, I am taking it to the dealer and buying a used Toyota sitting on their lot and saying goodbye to Ford for another 35 years. I have driven Toyota's for 35 years. My last Ford became a brick and I got rid of it in 1989. Lost money. Got nothing for it. The reason why I got rid of it was because it kept having "electrical issues" (would die on the freeway, battery wouldn't hold a charge, electric fan would not turn on). Funny how here we all are, 35 years later, and it seems that the Maverick is producing the same issues I had in 1986-1989.

I'm with you, Butch. Without this forum, I would be dumb and happy with my Maverick, not worrying about a thing. But, living on this forum has gotten me to the stage where every morning when I turn the key, I think, "Oh shit, I hope it will start." It is not a comfortable feeling...whereas my Dad's Edsel started EVERY TIME.

Sometimes you just have to pull of into the ditch, toss a match into the window, and hitch a ride back to town.
Don't look back, it will make you smile.

Yes, I have a Maverick. BUT . . . I also have a 2017 RAV4 sitting in the driveway. Insurance. For when I need REALLY reliable transportation that I don't have any doubts about.

This board reads like a bad amazon review page. Any interested buyer who reads this board should be scared off. I've got 2 23 hybrids and I'm getting that "I need to dump these" feeling.

This plus the $5,000 price increase from Ford as it was holding me back. Over the last 20 years I've driven strictly Japanese and one German (VW) and I'm afraid of the reliability or lack thereof with an American vehicle
