Something funny. The door sticker on my XLT Hybrid says tire pressure should be 34 psi. My tires say 44 psi. My pressure indicator on the info system confirms they are 44 psi. Obviously, 44 is correct, but why did I get a sticker with a normal car tire pressure listed? Annoying.

44 psi is the maximum pressure for those tires. You would probably need to inflate the tires to that psi if you planned to load the truck to it's maximum GVW. Which I doubt any of us is doing, or will do. The sticker psi is a compromise between load capacity, good ride, tire wear, and gas mileage. I'd recommend running something a bit above the sticker 34 psi, but 44 psi is too high IMHO. (I am runnimg 38 psi and it seems to work pretty well.)

Generally, a pressure listed on the tire itself is a maximum pressure. The sticker is correct and is based on the specific application. My understanding is that Ford over inflates the tires for transport.

The sticker should give the recommended cold inflation pressure. Does the 44 psi on the tire show “maximum pressure “?
Sorry, I’m a little late.

Ok, this makes sense that Ford was over-inflating for some reason.

No, the rating on the tire itself is NOT correct unless you need maximum carrying capacity—for the rating of the tire. The rating on any tire is it’s maximum pressure it can sustain, and what load in pounds/kg’s it can carry at that maximum pressure. A particular brand/model tire can be installed on many vehicles of differing weights and capabilities, thus it is up to the vehicle manufacturer to determine proper tire pressure. Some tires have 44psi, as the max, while “LT” truck tires can be 50, 65 , or higher.

You need to go by what’s on your sticker in the door jamb as your recommendation. Over or under-inflating can cause a whole series of issues ranging from abnormal tread wear to overheating and blowing out.

Ok, but do we know why the factory is putting in the maximum pressure, and why the dealership doesn't let some of the pressure out before we pick up our trucks?

My sticker says 35.. I think.. but I have the optional 17" wheels and different from standard tires so I wonder if I should just stick with 35 (cold) or if it should be different. I guess my question is, does the sticker on the door jamb reflect my optional wheels/tires? I set them at 35 which usually equals about 38 when driving.

It is common for OEM’s to ship with higher pressures. Ford isn’t the only one. Vehicles may be in transport for long periods of time, and as this forum has shown, sometimes months. Things can happen during that time of inactivity, including flat spots. Forum members have reported waiting months in some cases—and receiving their new Mav with tire pressures maxed out, as well as well as their gas tanks on empty and windshield washer fluid also low. Dealers are supposed to “prep” new vehicles before handing over to the owner, and tire pressure should be part of it, but results vary. You are welcome to call your dealer and ask about proper tire pressure and why yours was left at max. “Oops” is my view.

More info here on “new vehicle” tire pressure for further reading:

Yes, the sticker on the door jamb should reflect your optional wheels. It should list the specs of your wheels on the door jamb next to the PSI rating.

The only time you really need to adjust your PSI is if you're getting thinner or wider tires than stock- wider tires will require lower PSI since they have a greater contact patch and thinner tires would require a greater PSI because of the lower contact patch.

Unless you want your truck to bounce down the road and feel every pebble an crack in the road, use the recommended pressure on the sticker. If you're going to put an elephant in your bed, use the max tire pressure ;)

Many dealerships DO let some air out.
