Playing any other audio than Apple CarPlay/Android and radio - has there been a solution?

So I’ve been griping over the fact that the only way I can listen to music in my Maverick is by either streaming or listening to the radio. Has anyone figured out a way to make hooking up a thumb drive or an MP3 player actually work in their truck? I’ve tried the thumb drive deal and every time I get in my vehicle it’s like 25 minutes of indexing before it’s able to play a song and then it’s super sketchy trying to get it to play through a whole song. Something interesting to note my buddy plugs a thumb drive into his brand new Toyota, and it instantly works. None of this long-term indexing that needs to be done every time I’m kind of wondering if Ford has created an update yet for the head unit to get around this

Just copy your music to your phone and use your music player of choice, instead of the slow, clunky truck software. Without fail, it starts auto-playing over bluetooth (not carplay or AndroidAuto) within 10 seconds or so after starting the truck.

Tons of players for Android phones, but one good free one with no ads is Pulsar. The pay version adds a few features like premium equalizer, etc.

I use a micro SD card in a mini Micro SD card reader, works great. Just make sure it's formatted for FAT32 or exFAT (for cards larger than 32GB) to make sure it will work.

I’ve got 1200 songs on my thumb drive. It takes about a minute to load. I want to find a way to make the thumb drive the default. It always defaults to radio.

Strange, mine always defaults to whatever it was last set to. 🤔

Anyplace you might recommend to download free music to play on Pulsar? I have a vague idea how all this works and am trying to figure out how to get some tunes in my Mav. 😬

I have a 64gb thumb drive exFAT format in my XLT and have well over 10,000 MP3 songs on it sorted into folders. No problems at all. This one plugs into either USB port which frees up the other port for my Android Auto wireless adapter: https://amzn.to/48qQaxk

If you still have a CD drive in your computer and any CDs, then there are numerous applications that can rip the tracks to a thumb drive/ memory card. All the CDs I accumulated over the 90's and 2000's I archived on my computer to use on my MP3 player, and then later smartphone. I also use the download feature in Spotify to load my phone as it is the only media service I have a subscription to.
As far as obtaining downloads of music legally for free? can't help you much there.

First answer for SD drive music is look for SOURCE - and select USB drive.

Have at least 700 songs and found that putting them all on one SD drive makes for very slow indexing. You can get 2, 3, 4 GB flash drive from AliExpress for $2 or $3 dollars and they make indexing directories of Music so much faster by limiting to 100 to 200 songs for each SD Drive. Have all songs on an Iphone but indexing and searching slower from the Iphone.

Same reply as Obfiscator posted.
I converted all of my old CDs I wanted to play in the truck into MP3 format on my computer. Then connected a cable from the PC to the phone and copied them to the phone storage.
I no longer buy CDs, but purchase music either from Amazon, cdbaby, Bandcamp or similar services. Then I copy the music files to my phone to play in the truck.

That's odd. On my Pixel phone, searching is instantaneous. I have music in folders and use folder view in the Pulsar music player. Most of the time though, I just leave the player on shuffle play and the music starts playing within seconds, after I get in the truck and turn the key.

I put a 400Gb SD card in my Motorola cellphone and it's not even 1/4 full. It plays through Android Auto with the free VLC media player (which can play audio and video with no ads...of course, I don't get video on the Maverick display).
I prefer to own music that I like and rarely stream it, but music's the only thing I avidly collect these days.

I wonder how much time I spent turning cd’s into MP3’s and copying files and loading my phone , drives and other players ?
Isn’t technology supposed to save time?
I think I spent like 3 weekends one time putting all my cd’s onto my computer back in 2000 . Still fighting with loading or playing them on any vehicle I have
Time in my life I’ll never get back .Almost seems changing cd’s would still be more time efficient . At least they sound way better!.
Apple family music has been the easiest by far , just hate when Apple adds to my playlists!
