I'm curious about this and know little. I corresponded with Livernois Motorsports about a tuner for my 100% stock Mav XLT 4wd with tow package. They said this:

"On 93 octane you will get peak vs. peak gains of 50+WHP and mid range
> gains of 100WHP+."

I asked with stock air and exhaust? They said yes. At $600 seems like a bargain. Is there a downside to this?

I searched here and found another brand tuner with similar claims. I saw a dyno chart and was really pleased to see most of the gains were in the low end and midrange. Seems like a win win.

What kind of place should I look to for the install? How much? Location is S W NH if there are specific recommendations. Thanks all!

Is your Maverick out of warranty? The downside of a tuner is it can negate your warranty. If you dont care a tuner seems to be the best bang for buck option out there.

What he said. ^^^^^

There are piggyback units such as the JB4 from Burger that can provide the boost you're looking for without flashing the entire system. The unit should be removed when service is done..... wink, wink.

Assuming your willing to take the risk of doing this, I would suggest you research established LOCAL tuners in your area that have the expertise/knowledge/experience that can supply/install the various components and software tune

As others pointed out - flashing the system voids the warranty.

I really want to do the Livernois tune but the Maverick's 8spd transmission really operates as a 7spd transmission and the Livernois tune remaps the TCM and unlocks the 8th gear as well.

If you have any issues with your drivetrain - Ford is going to point at the tune and deny any warranty claim (5yr or 60k miles).

While it would totally unlock and change the Maverick, it is simply not worth the risk for me right now.

I am thinking of going the JB4 route. I would like a little performance gain with the least amount of risk. JB4 seems to be a "safer" alternative.

Piggyback to see if it suits you, then flash tune if you don't care about your warranty.

From my experience in the Harley Davidson world, I would make sure any method you use, be it a flash of the vehicle computer or a "piggy back" device, does NOT set any type of tattle tale in the vehicle that can be seen during any warranty repair attempt.
Again from dealing with Harleys, most every device used leaves a fingerprint that a dealership service tech can find when they connect to the vehicle. Even the add - on tuning devices that you unplug before you bring the vehicle in for service.
For that reason alone, I wouldn't use one unless you're willing to accept the risk if loosing your warranty.

Thanks to all for quick responses. Thanks to Mods for moving my post to proper forum. For a grandpa who wants this to be able to get a little extra when someone is playing passing games and just for fun I believe the Burger JB4 is the obvious choice for me. And I am still surprised about the amount gained with a stock exhaust and airflow.

The 2.0 ecoboost will have zero issues when given a standard tune from any of the reputable tuners.

I tuned at 1k miles, and have 47k miles on my Maverick, and I guarantee I've put my truck through more than any other individual. Go with whoever you feel gives you the most for your buck. For me it was 5Star, since I had used them in the past.

Also, ask the company about retunes for if/when you decide to upgrade more(intercooler/downpipe/etc)

I wouldn’t ever put a piggie back pos on anything I owned. I’ve been dealing with some of the most reputable ford tuners in the industry for the last ~20 years.
For the Maverick I’d recommend Adam at tuneplusinc.com

I would like to hear your opinion of piggyback tuners. I realize they won’t be the best option for the most power, however, I’m not going to the drag strip or trying to break records. The JB4 is the piggyback I’m interested in. You seem to very knowledgeable and experienced on this forum.

Sorry, haven't been online much recently. I don't think you can go wrong with a piggyback. The main reason people go this route is to make it completely untraceable when repairs are needed. No, they won't give you the full tuning potential of a dedicated tune, but from what I hear they work pretty well to gain 20-30whp. That's a decent pickup that you will feel. I never went that route because I already had an X4 handheld, and already had my plans for QuikRik before I even had possession, lol.

Thanks, for the input. I am not looking for the highest performing tuner, just a little gain while keeping things well within limits of all stock parts

For me, the biggest impact moving from a "piggyback" to the Cobb AP was less about power, etc and more about the ability of the Cobb to update the shifting behavior. The truck shifts so much smoother and more logically now compared to Ford's stock shift mapping. The added punch is obviously a benefit, but I've probably enjoyed the improved shifting the most.
