I never saw the point of the door lock keypads until I bought my Maverick. I go for extended rides on my bike when I can and suddenly find it very useful. I have had the same concerns when I ride my bike, but I have the app on my phone as a backup.

Yup. I've been mountain biking all over the central Appalachians. Key stays in the car. No problems with the keypad on the XLT. Same thing for paddleboarding, swimming, etc.

So I rarely do this, just occasionally when duck hunting and it's best not to have a fob in my pocket. Have never had a problem on my f150 but I did this on the Mav Lariat and the factory Keypad would simply not work at all. Finally had to call my son to Uber a key up. After getting in, I randomly tried the steps to fix the intelligent access entry lock and unlock feature and voila the keypad worked again. No idea why intelligent access would fix the keypad but it did. Isn't intelligent access the handle sensor? So thinking as I post, duh, the handle sensor needs to work in conjunction with the keypad.

Regardless, expensive lesson. Will never lock key in the truck and rely on Keypad.

My F150 don't have Intelligent Access so I'll still do it on that truck

Did you try locking the car with keypad again and then using the code? I had it happen once and that worked. I assume someone had tried to use the keypad when I was away from truck.

I did not know what that was until I read the manual
I set it up and I did not like it
So i deactivated it

I’ve used this for 30 years or more on different Fords and never had a problem, including my Maverick.

What IP addresses are used when remote starting your vehicle via Ford Pass?

Most likely, there are three - the IP address of your phone as it connects to the Ford Pass servers, the IP address of those Ford Pass servers, and the IP address your Maverick gets assigned when it connects to the cell tower to talk to the Ford Pass servers.

I suppose it's possible the communication between the car and the Ford Pass servers are via text rather than Internet communication, but even if that's true those texts are almost certainly passed over the Internet via an SMS gateway to the Ford Pass servers.

EDIT: And if it is using an SMS gateway and thus just using the phone network, that's still three IP addresses, because there's the IP of the SMS gateway itself.

My intelligent access on the driver side on my lariat hasn’t worked in months so I’ve had to use the keypad. It works fine on the passenger side.

Has this happened to any other lariat owners?

There was a TSB to reprogram the BCM to correct the Intelligent Access becoming inoperable.

The one on the truck and the one on your phone and possibly the ones each one is getting Network Address Translated to (NAT). I'm not super duper familiar with cellphone networks so I don't know if they're using IPv4 or IPv6.

PLUS the one(s) on the Fordpass servers.

I've used the keypad successfully 100's of times with key left in truck. No issues. None.

Must be a one off. I have not had my 24 Lariat Hybrid that long but the dealer installed keypad seems to be working fine. In almost 20 years of ownership the keypad has always worked. on our 2004 Ford Excursion.

Yeah, I think you're right. A friend of mine with an F150 said he never takes his key fob. Always uses the keypad.

That wouldn't tell you anything about the connection between the vehicle and the server. I'm sure the phone's connection to the app is internet traffic, but without access to the network I can only guess at the vehicle-to-server connection. I suspect you're correct and it's "phone data" (aka Internet traffic over the cell network), but your proposed test is flawed.

And text isn't really more expensive - they just charge you more for it (or used to). Every device connected to the cell network needs to check in periodically so the system knows what tower to send data to if it needs to reach the device - the original text messaging system was built to use the extra bits on that checkin and acknowledgement system (which is why they had the specific size limits they did). It was effectively free bandwidth that cost the cell phone companies nearly nothing - fees for texts were essentially pure profit. But that's another story.
