This week I took my Hybrid into the dealership for the battery harness "customer satisfaction" program. To make a long story short I got a current generation Escape SEL, fully loaded by the looks of it, with the EB engine (same engine as Maverick EB?) as a loaner. It's a good thing I got a vehicle, because it's been there for three days now, and counting. They kept breaking things, but that's not what this post is about. :cautious:

Anyway, to this quick comparison review after three days with the Escape, I think it's one of the newer ones, has less than 24.5k miles on it.

Plus for Escape
- Interior seems better designed other than being black. The seats are not uncomfortable, just different and don't like vinyl fake leather seats. Even with the heated seats on full, they are still cold for a good 5 minutes after driving off, which is after 5-6 minutes remote start.
- Has full sync (no idea which version) infotainment which is much more responsive (including backup camera)
- Push button/keyless and has digital keypad on driver door

Negative for Escape
- Slow to get off the line initially, but quick over all. Turbo lag though, I'm getting used to it, but yuck.
- Transmission shifts feels like it's a junky manual with an automatic clutch or something like that. Very jerky when changing gears, lots of lag on shifts and makes driving less fun, and a little uncomfortable.
- This one has the issue I've read some Maverick owners had with the power window, in which it doesn't want to stay up. Very frustrating, but finally got it to stay up.

Plus for the Maverick Hybrid
- Quick launch, good for getting into traffic in the city
- Hybrid power train, smooth as butter, no shifting and lurching.
- No Turbo lag!
- No sunroof, on mine anyway!
- Has a truck bed
- It's a Maverick :D

Long story short, cannot wait to get my Maverick back!

The escape might have a 1.5L EB. A 2.0L EB would give a faster feeling compared to a 2.5L hybrid because it is actually faster. Turbo lack on 2.0 is barely noticeable compared to a 1.5.

Escape really shines in the Hybrid AWD category. I can't say I'd be interested in an EB Escape at all. I think your experience would be much more positive with the Escape had it been a Hybrid.

I had the panoramic roof on my Escape and found it to be totally pointless. It created so much glare in the rear view it was basically unusable. But the eCVT just worked in it, which is more than I can say for the 4K Maverick EB lol. It feels exactly like you describe in the Escape. Of anything leads me to look at another vehicle it will be because of the transmission.

Was your Escape the new one with the larger screen in it? If so, did you find the climate control buttons being in the screen itself to be an annoyance?

My wishlist for a Maverick refresh is bascially the perfect blend of the Escape and Maverick:
AWD Hybrid
Same screen as the current gen Escapes but climate control as physical buttons
"leather" trim interior. Like this (including the ambient lighting in the cup holders):

Ford Maverick Maverick Hybrid vs Escape EB 220504_Ford-Escape-Hybrid_Still-51

And the same center console arm rest as the Escapes instead of the shorter one we get in the Mavericks. I generally do not like black interior but I think that picture is a very tasteful blend.
Fog lights would be nice too...

But exterior wise I just find the redesign they did on the Escapes to be ugly as hell. My previous one looked a bit sporty:

Ford Maverick Maverick Hybrid vs Escape EB 001

But the redesign makes them look like small soccer mom vans. I think it's because they painted some of the body molding/trim and there is no contrast as well as the ugly choice in most of the colors and lack of nice sporty looking wheels. Sometimes contrast is better.

Here is hoping for a Maverick "ST" in Hybrid AWD. That's what it would take to get me out of my current Maverick.

I must have a previous gen, it looks just like the one you pictured, white with the panoramic sunroof and similar interior, no stitching on the seats or steering wheel though. Might be FWD, since there is no AWD badge. I've never looked at Escapes before driving this one, so I don't know what's what about them at all. It could be the 1.5L or 2.0L, no idea which, would it say on the door jam sticker or engine cover? I'll have to look today, hopefully before I get the Maverick back (fingers crossed) this evening.

Agreed, I'm sure the hybrid would be a much better driving experience, they generally are IMO. The drone of the Atkinson cycle engines is a little annoying, but is more than made up for by everything else.

We have a PHEV Escape SEL and hybrid Maverick lariat. The 2 things the Escape has going for it are better seats (they are perforated and breathe in addition to being more comfortable overall) and the plug-in capability. We haven't had to buy gas for the Escape since our last road trip nearly 6 months ago. If they ever make a PHEV Mav I will be first in line to buy one.

Inquiring minds want to know how you know ;)
OPs experience reminds me of a few 1.5Ls we drove when shopping for a 2020 Escape, especially with AWD. Based on that I talked her into the 2.0L

@Montana
How could you tell it is a 2.0? Based on OP experience, I think it is a 1.5.

You made the right choice. I would not touch anything lower than 2.0L (could be 1.9xxL) T or no T. I drove a Bronco sport 1.5L as a loaner for a weekend. I had it switch with another vehicle on Monday early in the morning. I just could not do it.

Forgot they even had the 1.5L in the Escapes. That said, ew... 2.0 or 2.5L... 1.5L is garbage.

I fail to see the purpose of this exercise. Truck vs SUV, 4cyl vs. 3cyl., hybrid vs. non hybrid, apple and oranges.

with the EB engine (same engine as Maverick EB?)
2020-22 Escape SEL was available with any of the powertrain options, with the 1.5L being the base option. Thus that's the most likely for rental/loaner/other fleets. SEL was actually the only trim available with all four powertrain options - 1.5L I3 EB, 2.0L I4 EB, FHEV (Hybrid), and PHEV.

The 2.0L EB option is the same engine as found on Maverick EB. Both 1.5L and 2.0L EB use the same 8F35 transmission.

Do you think the eCVT and turbo lag on the Mav 4K turbo and the base FWD model would be the same? And if you had to do it over would you still buy a Maverick?
The eCVT has zero lag. It just goes. I was skeptical about a CVT of any variant after owning a Subaru Crosstrek with one and I hated it in that thing. But the eCVT is how a CVT should be. Never bothered me a bit. Turbo lag on the EB Maverick at least in my experience is definitely noticeable especially on the lower speeds. I'll be honest here - the only reason I got the EB was because of the issues the Hybrids were having (my Escape was one of them and I didn't trust it in the long run) and because it was AWD.

No doubt if they made a Hybrid AWD Maverick I'd jump on it. It seems like they worked the kinks out from the factory as far as the crankshafts basically just snapping in half, but who really knows. Only time will tell and so far the reports from newer models beyond '22's are that it was solved. How though? Who honestly knows?

I fail to see the purpose of this exercise. Truck vs SUV, 4cyl vs. 3cyl., hybrid vs. non hybrid, apple and oranges.
It is an apples to oranges comparison being a truck and a crossover - but they are the same platform overall so it's really not that crazy to compare them. Same goes for the Bronco Sport. When you use the same platform across different vehicles, the similarities are very evident and it becomes less of a discussion on the purpose of each vehicle and more about the things they share.

It's not an exercise, just Maverick owner experience with another vehicle that I got as a loner while my Mav is in the shop (which it isn't anymore, thankfully). This could be helpful for someone coming from an Escape too, since the Maverick and Escape are built on the same platform, seems comparable to me. The Maverick is an SUV with a truck bed, let's be real. Many shared parts between them as well. Just saying the Maverick is better. Chill. ;)

EB doesn't have an eCVT, only the hybrid. ;) EB Maverick has the same 8 speed auto., but the 4k has a different gear ratio though, it's setup for towing, than the FWD or AWD without 4k.
