Changing your own oil - 2.5L hybrid

I do take my Ram to the dealer for oil changes, but that's because it has a lifetime warranty (something you could get during the Great Recession) and I don't want to give them any excuse to deny it by claiming I skipped service. It's not synthetic oil, but they don't charge anywhere near $120 either.

I can still buy a family pack of chicken breasts for like $10. That's much cheaper than raising your own chickens. I know this from experience. Socks? Don't know where you shop or maybe you're in Canada but I can get a pack of 6 pairs Dickies or Wrangler work socks for less than 20 bucks and they last a whole year. I estimate I'll change my oil 3x per year. That will save me enough to buy 54 pairs of socks!

Yeah, inflation sucks now so I'm cutting back on things I don't need like eating out and overpriced dealer oil changes.

Thank you for the heads up on this before my hybrid arrives. I will NOT be using my local dealer any longer because I have caught them not rotating tires twice while getting the “works” package along with a mess under the hood. $100 for a crap job, no thank you.

I guess my choice will be down to my local shop that I trust but charges even more than the dealer OR this old man getting back underneath his vehicles in order to ensure that the job is done right. I guess this underbody shield will just add a little more time to the job. Hope I don’t lose any hardware.

Most engineers I know are cheap as can be and refuse to pay anyone to do something they could do themselves out of principle. For me it's more a matter of time than money though. Any time I've taken a vehicle to the dealer it takes them a minimum of an hour and a half to do a simple oil change and their "free 100 point inspection" so they can upcharge you for things like cabin air filters. Add to that another hour driving to the dealership and back. The last time I went to one of those 5 min oil change places the line was out into the street and the two times before that they didn't have the filter I needed - for a Camry, most common car on the road!

Nope, I'd rather spend 15 minutes doing it myself and making sure it's done right. Well, 30 minutes because of the stupid panel!

Engineer here - you couldn't have described me better. Last time I took a car to a quick-lube shop they got oily fingerprints all over the hood, window switches, and steering wheel - nevermind up-charging because my parents' Kia takes 6 quarts and has a "special" oil filter. Haven't gone back since. Nevermind the numerous other garbage shop experiences I've had...

Not in my world. The reason everything is so expensive is people just keep paying the greedflation. The thought of scaling back just a little, scares people to death. Myself I cut Sling TV and saved $61 a month. was hardly watching it and I found many other free or very low cost alternatives for the channels I was watching on Sling.

Until you drop a screw and spend 30 minutes looking for it. At 69 you're probably retired and don't GAF about wasting time.

Funny how you all are fixated on the second part of my original post, yet no one has bothered to answer the first question. How much does paying for an oil change on the hybrid typically cost? I don't think I'm saving much money doing it myself, but my time is money also.

My last oil change at the dealership on our hybrid Maverick was:
Parts: $49.76
Labor: $20.10
Total: $69.95.
I used to do all the oil changes myself on all our vehicles over the years but I take our two trucks (Mav and F-150) in twice per year now. The extra cost isn't that much and I figure they might catch something I don't. As for going through the trouble of driving to the dealership, etc, we live in a smaller town so it gives my wife and I a chance to run errands, catch breakfast, and so forth. The extra cost is slight compared to what you paid for the parts alone.

Yep. Which is why when we moved 13 years ago before retirement we did a lot of research. Everything is lower cost. Heck, we bought a house that is twice the size of what we had prior as well as 10x the land, and our property taxes were instantly 75% less than our former abode, and have never gone up in those 13 years! I doubt our old homestead's taxes can claim that.
