I had the same problem with my hard cover and solved it like this:

Here are the basic dimensions I used, make the 2 parts and invert one of them. use 2 short (1.25 length) 3/8-16 screws but don't tighten them so tight the boards won't slide. Attach a stretch spring between the eye hooks and as you push the board ends together the spring has tension.

I too have had these problems. The 3rd one they sent we was better on the the hole pattern with 3 out of 4 lining up. Also used a Dremel tool to clear the fenders. I put the rubber bumpers on the bottom of the guard rather than stick it on the painted hood.
