this week Wifey was in the DMV and somehow it came up that in Ohio whenever you renew your vehicle registration there is a additional fee of $100 for Hybrids and $200 for 'full' electric vehicles. they dont charge you extra when you buy your vehicle, just when you renew as far as i know.

Do they do this where you live?

now i understand that the states are scrambling to maintain their gas tax revenues, as Americans transition to a majority hybrid/full electric fleet gas tax revenue will no longer be able to support road construction and maintenance, the current spending is woefully inadequate as it is. bridges & roads are crumbling ALL over America so obviously they need all the $$ they can get. i can sorta see the logic but disagree with my states math. in Ohio the state portion of the gas tax is $0.385 p/gl. since ive retired i only drive about 5-7k miles per year, at 7k miles = 175 gl = $67.37 in gas tax. why do i have to pay so more to own a less polluting vehicle??

now if i had a full electric that would mean a even more substantial penalty for adopting a technology thats not only good for the planet but is also being pushed BIG TIME by our and other governments. my bother-n-law lives in Florida and you pay a fee up front thats a % purchase price and thereafter you pay the same registration fee as everyone else.

i would institute a system whereby hybrid/electric owners would pay the same fee as everyone else along with some prorated sum based on your yearly mileage totals which could be captured at your annual inspection(if your state does those). not perfect but better than charging me more than what i believe to be my "fair' share.

Per this, you paid the $100 when first registered too. https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/vr-firstissuance.aspx

In IL, there is an additional $100 fee for full-electric vehicles, no extra for Hybrd or PHEV.

That's it? 😉

I pay something like $410 on registration a year, plus some of the highest per-gallon taxes and some of the most expensive gas in the country here in good ole Washington. 😒

as i said, "as far as i know". i took delivery 26 April 2023 and the dealer processed the transfer of registration from my trade in to the new Mav at that time. i received my new certificate of registration dated 5/9/23. fees levied by the state were a $16 state fee and a $5 deputy fee, which i assume went to my local county for a grand total $21, perhaps different fees for existing registration transfers ?

i do not dispute that the screenshot you posted is what you found on the Ohio BMV website, i am only reporting on my own experience and relaying the info the lady at the BMV gave Wifey. i can tell you that NOBODY in my little 'circle' had ever heard of these fees.

I have Travelers Insurance and they gave me a discount because my Maverick is a hybrid. (Don't know the amount of the discount, but was in the list of qualified discounts). Regular hybrid's use more gas than plug-ins, so they shouldn't be taxed more, as full electric or plug-in hybirds.

Yes Indiana charges for hybrid I assume they charge more for full electric. I believe it’s a federal thing. They want more electric vehicles so they can charge us more.
Follow up I looked at the BMV it says Indiana charges $50 /yr for Hybrids.

In Tennessee, starting next year at registration renewal, hybrid = +$100, EV= +$200. I agree that it’s not exactly fair to make everyone pay the same regardless of mileage, but since Tennessee doesn’t have state inspections, there’s no easy way to verify mileage.

I think the rationale is that the tax on gas helps maintain the roads that we use. If you're not paying for gas, but still using the roads they're trying to make it up. Someplace.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that that's the thought.

I'm also from Ohio and I don't agree with the hybrid tax, but I do agree with the fee for electric vehicles since it doesn't use gasoline at all. They probably made the $100 fee based off of a Prius which gets 50+ miles a gallon combined. We still get fuel like everyone else with a hybrid, and it's a 38.5 cents per gallon gasoline tax here. Essentially what I'm saying is it's like a double tax for a hybrid system which is not fair and needs reevaluated.

I saw something about some states/govt trying to figure out how to tax someone based off of miles traveled per year and getting rid of the current pump/hybrid/electric vehicle taxes completely. I don't see that going over very well because it'll punish certain vehicles more than others. Why should I get taxed the same as another vehicle which tears up the road much more? (thinking actual large trucks, SUVs and Semi's) Tracking that would be a huge pain in the ass and will also likely lead to fraud.

When one buys a new vehicle in Arkansas, they go to the DMV, pay the sales tax on the full price of the vehicle (minus sales price of trade-in, if any), and registration & tag fees. There is no inspection. The dealer handles none of this. There is an additional up front & annual fee of $100 for full electric vehicles and a $50 fee for Hybrids.

I get that they want to recoup some of the revenue lost from slightly declining gas tax revenue. But Hybrid owners are still buying gas - just less of it. I could buy a high mileage small car with an ICE (e.g. Mitsubishi Mirage, etc.) and get around the same MPG as a Hybrid Maverick, and not be charged the $50 annual fee. Even though the two vehicles get roughly the same mileage, the Hybrid owner is penalized for using different technology to arrive at the same amount of fuel consumption.

I meant no harm, I was just trying to say that you probably paid the extra $100 at time of purchase/registration. Personally, I wouldn't be opposed to a per-mile tax, as oppossed to a flat rate, but I think too many people would consider this an invasion of privacy.
