Stellantis has decided they will only deliver the Jeep Wrangler 4xe to dealers for stock sales in 14 states because of California emission standards. Customers can order an ICE Wrangler but buying off the lot will require the plug-in engine only.

There was something about 2026 requirements for other manufacturers in the article. I think California has no new ICE sales starting in 2035 but Washington state says 2030 and that you can't buy an out of state ICE then and register it in Washington.

Do you think those states will demand only hybrid Maverick purchases in a couple of years? Guess if Maverick continues it will be electric in a few years.

Standard powertrain non-hybrid are available to order in all 14 states.
This strategy is limited to Stellantis.
Far too speculative in respect to Maverick to be productive.

It's not really that new of a thing for manufacturers to prioritize their deliveries to CARB states as they've required a certain percentage of sales to be ZEV/PHEV vehicles. Especially for some of the lower volume compliance car models would be pretty much unobtainable new outside of those states.

It's not really that new of a thing for manufacturers to prioritize their deliveries to CARB states as they've required a certain percentage of sales to be ZEV/PHEV vehicles. Especially for some of the lower volume compliance car models would be pretty much unobtainable new outside of those states.

They missed the mark not producing a PHEV Maverick, would have been much less of a boondoggle than the lightning.

even as a carb offering it would still at least be something available in the used market to all 50 states

In the 7 counties that encircle the San Fransisco Bay, high tech, high wealth, good charging infrastructure:

April 2023: 50% of new registrations were for EV's.

May 2023: 53% of new registrations were for EV's.

Personal observations / assessments:

Considering all the legacy vehicles on the road, out of ALL vehicles, about 5% or 1 in 20 are now Full EV.

We'll just ignore the mass amounts of used EV's less than 3 years old on the market right now. I'm obviously not arguing math... I'm arguing the brilliance of consumer trends.

Stellantis is not doing well. I watched a video on cars that have the highest amount on the lot. Almost all Stellantis vehicles. The Renegade has a two year supply sitting on lots right now.

EV's are 5.4 percent of sold cars now. Does it matter they are all in one area? Not really. I thought 35 percent had to be either EV or plug in hybrid in CA by 2030?

As far as getting around this Buy and register out of CA in another state. I know of people who do this now for other reasons. So it can be done and I expect many will do so. They cant ban out of state cars,.

It's 100% zero emission car and light trucks by 2035. 2030 in Washington. I don't think California has the out of state ban planned for then yet like Washington but probably will add it. And yes they can ban licensing out of state new cars that don't meet the requirement. Several other states are rushing to imitate California. Question becomes what if industry can't make enough of them, the electric grid can't handle them yet.

I can see a case where manufacturers start reducing ICE allocations to those states that are pushing EV hard. But dealers will scream if the EV/PHEV capacity isn't up to snuff to replace those ICE vehicles.

And even people who otherwise think EVs are decent tech have doubts about the long-term durability and affordability of the technology. 12 states have an average per-capita GDP less than the average cost of a new EV sold in 2022. People can't afford to take out more than a year's worth of income on a loan for a single vehicle. Cost has to come down.
