How To: Oil Change on Tremor Maverick

What I used for the oil change

13 and 15 mm sockets and ratchets
T30 Star Bit Socket (torx socket)
Oil filter wrench
Funnel
Motorcraft - Oil Filter (FL910S) for 2024 and earlier The 2025 needs a FL-2127
5w-30 synthetic motor oil
Oil drain pan
Aluminum foil
Painters tape

The height of the truck let me change the oil with out using ramps or needing a jack.

removed the Four - T30 TORX fasteners
Removed the six -13 mm bolts
The skid plate is heaver than you think it will be and awkwardly large, be ready to hold it.
The oil filter has some of the plastic under bumper under it so I taped the Aluminum foil to catch the oil that will poor out of the filter when you remove it.
I drained the oil and changed the filter. Installed new filter and new oil.
Checked the level of the oil, and checked it again after running the truck. Checked for leaks then put the skid plate back on.

The skid, was thicker than I thought it would be. Nice

Oil filter top left partly hidden under the plastic. But has plenty of room to reach it. Drain plug is on the back side of the oil pan, you can just see the edge of it.

The factory oil looks like alien blood. But you do need good light or else it just looks dark.

Oil drain plug, use the 15mm to remove.

One more photo showing the foil taped to the bumper.

More oil will come from the oil filter than you think and the bumper has lots of places for it to get stuck. This made cleanup easier.
Non-Tremor Mavericks don't need this, their bumper is different the oil filter does not drip on the bumper edge.

More oil will come from the oil filter than you think and the bumper has lots of places for it to get stuck. This made cleanup easier.

My FX4 has a second removable (plastic) piece between the bumper facia & the skid plate, comes off with a few more T30 screws. Not sure what non-FX4 Mav's use.

Also, the Tremor skid plate appears to be the same as my FX4. I was also surprised how heavy it was. The rear two bolt locations are slotted, so you don't need to fully remove them. It also helps hold/guide it back on.

I went by a post on the bronco sport form where they say to reuse it if it is not cracked.

The bronco sport badlands has the same 2.0 as the Maverick. Non-badlands BS have a different engine.

It is cheep so you may as well change it, just be sure the old one is gone and not stuck to the pan, you don't want to stack them old on new.

I reused it.

the Tremor skid plate appears to be the same as my FX4. I was also surprised how heavy it was.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the skid plates. No one makes an aftermarket skid plate upgrade yet, but I am wondering if someone did would they need to make both fx4 and Tremor versions?

The only difference I can see is the plastic "scoop" that is snapped on to the FX4 plate, where yours just has the open hole, back by the two slotted mounting points.

I put one of those on as well....pricey, but really well made & awesome to use.

Be careful not to over-torque the plug when you install it!

This forum is really terrific. Thanks to the OP, Dave and to Rivers90 for all the pics. I was concerned about getting the skid plate back in solo, but it's smaller than I thought, roughly 2'x3', maybe, and the back screws holes are slotted, as another poster noted, so that helps.
I had 2600 miles on my truck. Too soon? My Dad used to change his after 1000 miles on a new car, like 50 years ago.

So that was all good. Now for the concerning item. While tightening the new oil filter in place, this item fell out. I have no idea where it came from. I think it may have been loose just sitting i

Does anyone recognize this?

It's threaded on one end, so kind of adjustable.

So the Tremor only has the rear "skid plate" unlike the FX4 that has a two piece? Because if it's a two piece, be careful only removing the back portion of that underbody carriage. If it's like the FX4, it's actually designed to have both pieces removed together. Don't just uninstall the rear one unless you want to replace a bunch of those cheap "not quite bolt" thread things they go into.

Why? Because those crappy screw stop things they use will break easily. Not only do they rust, but they are flimsy as hell. They only use them on the spots where the "skid plates" meet. From the pics, it looks like the Tremor's don't have them but just wanted to confirm. To any potential FX4 owners reading this: Just go around the edges and take both off at the same time. Save yourself the heartache. FORD should have never used those crappy metal screw housings.

Looks like a hood stop or something similar. You might want to start your own thread to get more attention to it. Title it something like "help identifying part that fell off and where it came from".

Interesting they extended the plastic bumper so far instead of just using the dual piece FX4 style skid plate. Actually, it's a good thing (if you read my previous comment about the dual piece).

You can also buy a sort of "splint" funnel to wrap around. They are flexible and can be used as either a guide or a layer like you are using the foil for.

Here is an example of one

I forget which one I have specifically, but no need for it on the FX4 with both skid plates removed.

I just replaced the fuel filters in a 2019 Ram 2500 and they have a little tube to direct the fuel once you vent the front filter in the engine bay - right on top of the front dif lol. Like, if you are going to design a tube vent system to bleed with... why TF would you not direct the tube away from leaking on top of everything below it lol. Never ceases to amaze me. So many vehicle just have these terrible designs to leak fluids all over parts below them. Actually, the transmission level plug on the Mavericks is one of them too.
