I looked at the 9000-mile oil change. interval. The dealer said 5000 is better. Your thoughts?

Change your oil at least once a year! Don't fool around with that, but...

If you put lots of miles on your Mav and the miles are "normal" then 5K oil changes are only better for the dealer's pocketbook.

I don't suppose the fact that most dealerships realize the vast majority of their income from the service department would have anything to do with this.

You gotta be careful with advice. People will throw things at you that make them money, or that were true 50 years ago. Ford gave you a built-in oil service life monitor for a reason.

I just replaced a turbo in my commuter car. I’d keep the oil clean and fresh on that EcoBoost if I were you.

Good point. My Captiva had a tranny service notification at 135,000 miles. Took it to a tranny guy ( who was recommended by my 20 year mechanic)and he said don't touch it. Hes said If I insist he would take my $275 and I would curse him in 6 months. I dont think it would hurt to do it more often though. Right?

Exactly. I'm going to follow the oil life monitor. The last thing ford wants is a reputaiotn for engine failures, so whatever they programmed here is advisable and probably has a good safety margin baked in, too. Don't waste your money on needless oil changes.

Does the oil monitor measure just time and miles or does it discern quality of the oil as well?

This seems a little overkill; but it's your truck. I WFH and plan to do it no less than every 5,000 or twice a year (whichever is more frequent).

Ford recommended that you use their "approved" oil - one that meets very specific and detailed requirements. If you do that, regardless of brand, if it meets the spec, you've got the right "quality" oil for which the oil monitoring system is calibrated.

Ford's programming takes into account how "hard" the engine is working, and the service interval is automatically adjusted based on that. If you pull a trailer, drive a lot of mountains, or spend a lot of time idling, it reduces the oil change interval automatically. But regardless of how you drive, Ford states that the monitor will remind you to change the oil when a full year has elapsed since your last oil change.

So just use the specified quality oil, and change it when the vehicle tells you it's time. Easy peasy.
