Because MSRP is full retail price. Paying more than the full retail price on a depreciating asset at the top of the market does not compute to people who aren't okay accepting the full purchase price with markup as a sunk cost... And those who don't like to pay more than a fair, reasonable price.
You pay MSRP for a taco, and you know what that turns into!!!

"The order books aren't open yet."

Of the dealers in my town, 1 never took any orders, the other only did on the final Tuesday because I told them about it.

It IS a typical depreciating asset. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. These have a VERY temporary inflated value. The flippers who got in early made out well. You made out well if your fuel savings is really that great. But you still paid WAY over value for a vehicle who's value is going to plunge. Anyone who paid that much over sticker and doesn't keep it until paid off has years of negative equity ahead.
What has you hung up is that you are assigning value based on MSRP. That is really never the case. The typical auto situation is that a vehicle depreciates as it’s driven off the lot. A smart buyer never paid sticker. If you totaled a vehicle on the way home from receiving it your compensation by your insurance carrier will be less than what you paid. There have been several cases documented on this forum that people have received insurance compensation well above what they paid because the market value of their vehicle is over MSRP.

The issue raised by the maverick, especially the XL, is that when a guy would show up needing a base truck to put a guy in the field he was going to pay 40k and get 15-18mpg. The maverick shows up for half the price, getting twice the fuel economy. He’s making his money on the guy in the truck and doesn’t worry what he pays for the truck. He depreciates what he PAID, regardless of what its MSRP is.

I don’t expect the bottom to fall out on the hybrid market, but I don’t expect the typical commercial guy to care, because they use up their vehicles anyway.

You are using the contractor argument. I could give a shit about those guys, and yes they hold a lot of blame for the pricing. I am looking out for the average consumer with average credit who will be fucked by buying a vehicle over sticker. Values WILL plummet. They always do. How soon is the question mark. I paid sticker, which is as good as I can hope for in this market. But for those average people who did not, they will now be married to the truck until payoff otherwise they will have HUGE negative equity.

Me: Please send me a copy of my COVP. Also, can you tell me how many orders you took for 2023 and how many allocations you have? Can you tell me was my order one of the first or last placed?

Dealer: You ordered a gas engine so you should be built first. Thanks for shopping with us!

Me: Gas engine?🤦‍♂️

They never actually seem to answer your questions, do they? :(

Potty mouth….

It works both ways. For years contractors were the only guys driving bigger than half ton vehicles. Then it became hip to drive them to the office job and to church, manufacturers started filling them with creature comforts and now the average superduty is 75k. Dealer stock orders are for loaded trucks and the contractors have to play that game. Now the shoe is on the other foot and you call foul because I bring up a valid point?

I’m done. My point is valid and has been made.

Contractors don't have to play any games LOL. I have 2 friends that have substantial fleets for their construction related businesses. They order work trucks, or go to dealers that do fleet sales. They aren't putting fleets of $75k diesels on the road. They are buying single cab white work trucks. If a contractor does something other than that, that is on him. Not the business model. Nice try though.

I don't have a problem with dealers and the mark-ups they are putting on trucks. They are in the business of selling cars and trucks. If someone has the money, and doesn't mine the mark-up, then more power to them.
I DO have a problem with flippers. I don't have any numbers, but just the amount of posts here regarding flippers is staggering. Think how many buyers are not getting their truck, or had to wait for extended periods of time, because some greedy flippers ordered 2 or 3, with the intention of flipping. I wish Ford had put a $5000 refundable deposit of these trucks.

The sales manager at my dealership told me when I asked about their allocations, "We do not get allocations for mass market vehicles like the Maverick."

This is an email from my dealer when I asked about my priority code changing from 19 to 13 and hoping to change it to 10. She is making it sound like the dealer has no control over PC even 10 and above. I didn't think that was the case.

"That is correct, your priority code is at 13 my Ford Rep had me change all codes in all the orders, otherwise orders would not get schedule."

She completely dodged my pointed question as to their "allocations" and where I was in the line.

I'm doomed. Atlas Blue XL Hybrid, trailer hitch ordered 9/16/22.

Checking Ford chat my PC has miraculously changed to 10. I guess Ford asked my dealer to change it!

So you don't have a problem with dealers who are just car flippers, but use lobbying and laws to protect their scummy business model, but you really don't like the average person that gets a lucky one in a lifetime chance to sell a couple vehicles over what they paid for it?

I’m not sure why there is so much hatred against markup. If you don’t want to pay it, don’t. It’s just further demonstrates the personalities of the complainers to go on to vilify the dealers for charging it. Dealers are not doing anything wrong.

When Ford introduced the Maverick, prices were low, probably lower than they should have been, to generate hype and to jump start the new product. It worked, and there is demand, and the market is adjusting.

Just please stop complaining!!!!!
We found the carlot owner!

I ended up paying I little over 10k over sticker, but less than 5k over the truck I have on order. My first full month on the road I saved almost $1000 in fuel costs alone. My markup will be recouped far before the ordered vehicle is built.
You save $1000 a month on gas? What were you driving before, a tanker?
Even if you are doubling your mpg that's probably a ton of miles per month. My brain can't calculate all that at the moment but methinks a little exaggeration?
