Did someone hack up your exhaust thinking they were stealing your cat, but got the heat exchanger?

Not a technician, but looked up some info in workshop manual:
P237C: This DTC sets when the PCM senses an open circuit to the exhaust heat exchanger exhaust bypass valve.

Possible Sources

  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • BJB Fuse 8 (15A).
  • PCM
  • Frozen valve / Broken linkages
  • Valve alignment
  • Faulty position sensor
  • Clogged heat exchanger
  • Hoses
  • Coolant leaks

The diagnostic testing may lead to replacement of the muffler inlet pipe . Or it may be a wiring issue.

Is it very cold where you are now? One of the steps in the diag guide mentions " Residual condensation from normal operation can freeze the exhaust heat exchanger valve restricting its movement "

I received the same code several weeks ago. CEL was on. Didn't notice anything different when driving but took it to the dealer in short order. Was around 6600 miles. They diagnosed the problem to either a bad PCM or an issue with the exhaust heat exchanger. They replaced the PCM first but that didn't solve the issue. Ultimately they replaced the exhaust system and heat exchanger (took several weeks to get the parts). As of now everything is back to normal.

Ford Maverick Help with P237C code? IMG_0347

One thing I noticed was that the high temp coolant reservoir level was at the MIN mark when the CEL was on. Did a little research and I came across the f150 forum... https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/thr...-exhaust-heat-exchanger-leak-megathread.8634/

HX looks similar to what's on the Maverick and coolant leaks have been identified from the heat exchanger. In my case I never noticed evidence of a leak but who knows, it may be related.

Anyone able to share after bringing in what the end result/ fix was?

We got the check engine light at about 13,500mi, here in Vermont. Took it in today to have the codes checked and they said it seems to be an open circuit in the exhaust system. They need to get into the exhaust system to know exactly where the issue is. We have an appointment for next Wednesday, January 4th. They said it's safe to drive. We've definitely noticed our mileage dropping off from the 40's-50's down into the 30's.

Side note: We also hear something down in the dash sliding back and forth when we take corners. Not sure if a coin slipped into the heating vent at the back of the dash or what. (We're not in the habit of setting things onto the dash, so that's a mystery.) No idea how to get it out, so hopefully they can take care of that too. Ha!

Got a similar issue at 22K miles. Putting on a new heat exchanger next week. I do not know what all the codes that were captured.

I got the dreaded P237C code on my way from New York to Maine the day after Christmas. I scanned it to see what odes and that was the only one. I cleared it and it came back within 2 miles. I set up an appointment with Quirk Ford Augusta and they got me in yesterday. After doing some tests, they ordered the exhaust heat exchanger, told me it was ok to drive it as it is, and to call them if I noticed it getting worse. No estimation of time for the part to come in, thank goodness for warranties!

The ironic part is that my own check engine light came on last week one night. P237C. I did a google search to see if it was a common Maverick issue...and found my own post about it here!

It happened to mine just after we recovered from the Christmas blizzard weather, so it wasn't anything frozen.

Testing showed that the exhaust heat exchanger valve is faulty. The entire exhaust needs to be replaced. It is backordered. I went through the parts escalation process on it, and looks like they are expected to arrive at dealerships in late January.

I had this this same issue on mine last week.
I assume that they ordered the entire exhaust ("CONVERTER ASY") for you .... I can't see where the heat exchanger is serviced separately, and the PPT in the workshop manual directly you to replace the whole converter assembly.

I work for a dealer and submitted a case to Ford about the status of the part order for mine. Supplier to supposed to be shipping some out this week (to Ford distribution centers). ETA at dealership Jan 27th.

I’ve had the same code with the same diagnosis from the dealer, replace the valve, as part of the cat back exhaust system. The technician mentioned that it is a revised valve, and it is backordered.

Yes, the part # has been replaced at least 2 times, so it is revised!

Last I checked, the ETA was end of January - which may change.

Here are the latest remarks about the backordered part:
SUPPLIER IS PAST DUE, LATE ENGINEERING CHANGE, ETA TBD
Demand Analyst 01-13-2023 SUPPLIER PROMISED TO SHIP 100PCS WK OF 1/16

Currently 193of these on backorder.

Thank you for this!
We have been trying to find out from our service dept how long before the part comes in, so are grateful to have a time frame from you. Meanwhile, our Mini Cooper's warning light came on telling us we need new front brakes. It's always something, eh?
