Keyless is definitely a most costly option component wise. They may have also been trying to reduce semiconductor usage in the vehicle, so they put it on a rarer/more expensive trim. Just guesses really, like others have suggested it might have been an attempt to push people into more expensive trims as well... I would not personally pay an extra 4k for the lariat just to get a push start though, maybe some would.
Push-button start is in the Escape, not much cost to add it, heck the Kia Rio get push-button start standard.

Nothing in the Mav is particularly expensive, so I don't buy the component cost. Push button start was likely more of a packaging/marketing decision than a cost decision.

Escape is a significantly more expensive vehicle (starts at $28k for the Hybrid) than the Maverick. Those extra options do add up

Every component has a cost. Lets say Pushbutton start adds $150 to each vehicle, that puts it over the 20k base cost they were targeting, so it gets cut. I work in manufacturing, this is how things work out all the time.

On the push button topic, I don't think any Ford lower trim trucks have it. I think it is just driven by a combination of existing contracts and inventory, and maybe lower end fleet and business buyers that want the simplicity of a keyed ignition.

Otherwise, it is dumb, no cars it SUVs have keyed ignition anymore. Not too big a deal at the end of the day either way.

I see the impatient haters here bashing on Ford for constraints and wait times. I also see the Fanboys singing Fords praise for anything they do, even while people have been waiting well over a year for Broncos, 100k plus F-150s sitting in storage lots waiting on chips and watching as Ford has more and more supply problems well documented in the mainstream news with many of their vehicles with no clear answer or solution.

I get the supply problems on this and other items. What I don't often get is the response and answers from Ford and some of the fanboys. I think Ford has a hit truck on their hands with this Maverick, but I think they also may have rushed out some things too soon and not offered different choices and solutions to some of the problems they are now facing.

What I CANNOT stand is people that keep bringing up the "What do you want or expect from a $20k truck", any time Ford is called to task or we ask why certain options are not available on this truck. I ordered a $28k XL and cant get a stand alone cruise control. My friend ordered a $33k XLT and couldn't get a Sirius radio. Lack of a black leather choice in a $37k Lariat. Constraints on items that could be completed later after the purchase by the dealer instead of holding up an order indefinitely. Can we still use the "what do you expect for a $20k truck excuse when addressing any complaint"? I understand that I bought a truck from the cheaper end of their line, but I didn't buy the bottom of the barrel FWD base model.

The price range on these Mavericks go from $20k up to about $40k. That is a huge swing. In my case, my build is just over $28k. That no longer qualifies my truck as a $20k truck, at least in my mind. Very few people are buying the base model with no options. I would venture a guess the average build is somewhere around $28k. I think people who are paying this much have the right to gripe or talk about without hearing the "what do you expect for a $20k truck comment. If you want to bitch about people complaining that's fine, just don't use the $20k truck argument.

I also think more constraints are going to keep coming, I hope I'm wrong. I am not one of those constantly complaining here every 5 minutes, but I'm afraid that while someone decides to patiently wait for an item on constraint, another will pop up a month or two further down the line, further delaying the order.

As a side note, I will go on the record saying the next constraint will be a sun roof...

Rant over...
I went off on my dealer last week because of the same problem, I was complaining about something and he said what do you expect from a 20k truck and I was like have you seen my build(which he had on hand) it cost 37k not 20k.

Its so annoying when people use the under 20k start price to justify all failures/ lack of features, regardless of starting price the vehicle should reflect its MSRP.

Dudes,

Let me think .. ..hmmmmm... how to be nice..
I'll try.... don't insult the children in the sand box....
cool, I can do that....
So first...... how old are you..... oops failed already...
Doesn't everyone know that everyone who has ever ordered a new vehicle is anxious and excited and stressed from the endless (seemingly) wait.

I'm 74...... I ordered my first car from the factory in 1965 a Pontiac GTO with a custom Non-Pontiac color... ( and that was in a normal world)
so... I've been here and done this probably before most everyone of you were even born..

My current dealer, the epic
.. Long McArthur Ford
in Salina Kansas advised and wsrned me of potential delays and gives me weekly updates about the entire goings on at the factory. They were made aware of things that would hold up production and advised me that if I wanted to get it quickly I should delete certain things so I deleted the sliding rear window, the drop in bedliner and the co-pilot 360.
The moment I did that ...my Maverick was scheduled XL AWD 4K TOW..
It was scheduled within a couple of days.

so... my friends.....let it go..

Then make it standard on the XLT and above.

You might have ordered a car before many, no sure what this has to do with the thread!! Just an FYI, right now I'm on my 12th ordered car, 9 BMWs, 2 MB, and a Ford Maverick. Been down this road too many times, like you said, just chill.

Regarding Ford dealers informing purchasers of the Maverick, I'm sure every dealer is doing this, but people have selective memory. I can tell a patient that it will 2-3 days to get test results back, and the following day the patient hounding the nurses about the test results. Selective memory and someone mentioned that Amazon has caused people to be impatient and I completely agree with this.

My dealer told me I wouldn't see my Maverick until Nov or Dec, ordered it on 7-7-21. I haven't heard from my dealer since I faxed my paperwork to them (received my confirmation email back they received the paperwork) not expecting to unless there is a problem.

Know what I'm tired of?
People who bought something, regardless of it being 1¢ or $1,000,000, understanding there's no guarantee whatsoever on when they can expect delivery, then moaning and groaning that they have to wait.
FYI: I ordered a Lariat with that same understanding. I'm hoping like Hell to get a build date just like everyone else.
BUT: I don't feel like I've been lied to, or deceived. We were all told "fall delivery". Fall STARTS Sept 22nd.
I'm as anxious as everyone else. Stop the whining already!!!
Nail on the head!!

I'll tell you what stupid is. That's having a car with run flat tires and no spare at all. You can't repair them most of the time, they are expensive to replace and they are often hard to find outside of bigger markets. When i ordered the Maverick, one of the first things i did was to be sure it had a full size spare (and a jack)!
Yep. Real jack and spare are day 1 items.

Tried using one of those stupid scissor jacks and said never again. Bought a real jack for next time.

Getting real tired of the $20k truck argument. ..rant

I hear ya, but the Maverick only works because of that starting price point. The days of getting 'real value' like my Honda Fit are gone. Your Sirus Radio and stand alone Cruise control are not even on my radar.

Your argument is spending $28k, for a Maverick, surely you jest. You are going for it because of the gas mileage. Let's try to understand something here, it's not a truck in the true sense of the word, it's a 'runabout with utility'.

That just so happens to have decent horsepower and torque while getting gas mileage that even that dog Eco Sport from India with a 3 banger turbo could not get close to. Eco, please, total embarrassment. I would have been ashamed to drive that thing with that badge on it.

The Big three got greedy and lazy over the years, throwing crap in the market place to see what sticks. You see that laziness in even the Maverick's name. Absolutely no fore thought.
But it is what it is, if I buy one it sure as hell won't be for the name. There is simply nothing out there that can match my Honda's utility while still being affordable.

The only thing I lack is ground clearance. And it does bug me. The Maverick is a beast at over 8 inches in front wheel drive. And I got ideas about it's utility.

My fear is by the time I can get into one the younger gens out here will have gotten it so jacked up in price from their tow hooks, fog lights and the Howard Stern Sirus Radio it will become out of reach.

It most likely would be my last vehicle and I would very much like it to be new and not used.
As you get older most discover the gimmicks don't make up for utility and practicality.

$28k, for $22K i get me a Honda HR-V that has my Fit's utility cause it's built off the same platform.
What is that utility you ask, 'magic seats' that in a pitch I can actually stick a portable toilet inside and take a dump in privacy as once I do the magic with the seats gives me 4 feet of head room inside. 52 cubic feet of storage inside with flat folding seats, you only get 33 in the bed of the Maverick.

$16,100 brand new. And they were still that starting price last year when production ended.
(them days are long gone)

I don't think Ford cares what the 40+ people care.
Why then did they name it "Maverick?" About half the boomers here drove one at one time or another.

Nostalgia sells, but not quite as well as a good deal on a pickup.

Don't forget the curtains lol. I was shopping hrv's right before the mav was announced. Ended up hating them. The body shape had to change just enough to lose all the storage magic. They just aren't the same even though I probably would have ended up with one

Oh yeah, butt ugly with that shape but done for aerodynamics to get the gas mileage. And their engine is a dog at that. Like the Eco Sport way underpowered for the weight ratio. But none does the magic seats and now that the Fit is history it's only the HR-V.

But this Maverick has real potential if planned out right. My only problem is if I live long enough to see it through. It will be several years before I could get into one and by that time I just may say the hell with it and take the Fit to the grave as they say.

What kind of amazes me is how nobody has been producing a true utilitarian vehicle affordable for the mass's. They got people so buffaloed with the tech crap.

oh yeah that lack of power combined with the cvt. oofff. The lack of magic seats and flat interior storage is a blow but I'm ready to move to something with a bit more ease of access and miss a bed. But I'll be keeping my fit since I have the garage space for a spare vehicle. The excuse I'm using is because of some rust starting making it not worth much to sell anyway. But really I just don't want to see it go lol. One of the big selling points of the mav to me is how relatively low tech it is. Just feels honest like my Fit does. Also hit's the nostalgia button reminding me of my first vehicle (05 colorado)
