How To: Sync 3/4 swap for non Sync 3 XL/XLT

I wish some of you guys lived around me. Bought an APIM (preprogrammed to my VIN) and was about 98% of the way having that sucker hooked up, but got stuck on the last couple steps. Asked my dealership if they could finish the job so I don't break anything, but unsurprisingly they could not. So if anyone has FORSCAN and wants a 2020 F-150 SYNC 3 APIM, DM me. Otherwise I have a $450 paperweight.

I disabled xm in this config because I'm not going to pay for it, the rest was kind of trial and error to get things working without any DTCs

GPS was WONKY for about 8 minutes then figured itself out. Carplay doesn't show the navigation stuff next to the song in the 12" digital cluster using Apple Maps or Google Maps, but Android Auto does. If anyone else is looking to do this, make sure you don't mess up the wiring and have to shorten any, things get tight with shorter length. The black plastic of the HVAC shroud or whatever is SHARP, cut up my knuckles good. There are very few config options now in the infotainment, especially under "Vehicle Settings", I wonder if we can get some of those back. I cannot get Fordpass get to reconnected to my phone, errors out during Activate Vehicle. I've reset the app on my phone, and in the truck several times. Hopefully I can get it figured out before winter! Can confirm the backup camera framerate is higher, much smoother and doesn't skip like it used to. Comes on instantly when switching into reverse, used to take a few seconds sometimes. Can't think of anything else... maybe add some foam buffer or felt between the APIM and the metal brackets to reduce any future vibration noise.

Anyone have any luck getting vehicle settings back? Sounds like those would be important.

I'm helping a friend install Sync3 in his XL, I have Sync4 working in my XL but he want's to go Sync3 for the updates.

We bought a Sync3 Gen 4 APIM on ebay, plugged it in and just got a black screen, I was able to communicate with it with Forscan so I know the wiring was good. We returned that one for another, with the same issue.

Finally looked at Cyanlabs and it looks like you need a specific model to work with MY20+ screens?

I'm hoping someone has done Sync3 with success and let me know what unit you bought.

I still believe there is harness work to be done for Sync3. From Page 1:

Sync 3 will not have wireless carplay/android functionality and will require additional wiring

Sync 3 requires pins 53/54 to be connected in order to boot. This is likely why you are getting a black screen but can communicate with it over forscan. HS CAN can be tapped into from the OBD port. Pinout is in the OP.

It sounds like it is still a wiring issue. I would double check everything.

Maybe those with experience in this can help me out.

I swapped in a Nav enabled APIM for my Lariat Lux, Sync 3 gen 4, should be direct plug and play, as I understand.

Everything works EXCEPT the nav gps tracking. The map initially loads to a town in CO (probably where it was flashed/tested), and after a few minutes, I get the little "GPS" in a red circle with a line through it, similar to what happens when you drop satellite communication in heavy forest or tunnel.

Thoughts?

Agreed. Sync 3 no reason not to. OP mentioned only getting the nav version.
