My first post after lurking for a bit...

I have my 2023 Maverick ordered (Eco Boost, AWD, FX4 - simple build?), received my email from Ford and the dealer sent me a copy of an email from Ford stating they received and approved my COVP. That seems to be good news...

I ordered the FX4 package and I'm wondering if it is a constraint and if I should drop it...

I also did NOT order the 4K tow package because I read it is a constraint... I'd like to have it, but I don't want to delay my build.

Should I keep the FX4 or will I get a quicker build without it?

If I add the 4K tow, will this surely delay my build? It seems the only things I'm NOT getting with the 4K is the 7 pin, brake controller, oil cooler and different drive ratio? The FX4 comes with the heavier radiator and cooling fan - right?

I appreciate your recommendations...
You should be fine. Add the 4k and you will not be delayed.

Hybrid = delay
Lux = delay
bed-liner, toper, cover, mud flaps, cp360 = delay

At least it has been for the 2022 and it looks to be for the 2023.

You really have a build that should not be delayed. Now it is up to dealer allocations.

It was constrained for 2022 orders, late during the build cycle. The hitch itself wasn't constrained in the list we saw for 2023.

I don't have the invoices in front of me, but every time I've had to have a used truck's transmission rebuilt, adding an expanded trans cooler has only been a hundred or so. All you're doing is disconnecting the micro- cooler from the bottom of the transmission and replacing it with a full- sized one. Replacing a radiator isn't *that* expensive, either.

I guess it could be more than the price of 4k if you already had AWD. If you don't, however, it's hella cheaper and still worth it even for daily driving.
If you use aftermarket parts it will be cheaper for sure but not if you buy the OEM parts from Ford. How much do you think a shop is going to charge you to replace those items? I also forgot to add the larger cooler fan and shroud to the parts list.

The MSRP price on the fan and shroud is ~$359 and radiator for 4k tow is $359. You are almost at the price of the 4k package right there in parts. Yeah it will be less than MSRP but ihow much less will depend where you buy the parts from. Also the FX4 radiator is also a different part from the radiator used on the 4k tow packages.

You also have resale considerations if you plan to drive the truck into the ground, adding this aftermarket or on the factory build doesn't really matter. If you plan to sell it or trade it in later on that upgraded cooling will increase the value if was put on out of the factory. You can prove it was in use the whole vehicle's life unlike an aftermarket install especially if you do it yourself.

4K tow is more constrained than most of the things you listed save for the Tonneau covers and Splash Guards

From the 2023 commodities list:

4k Tow 20%
Hybrid 35%
Lux (XLT 30%/Lariat 25%)
Bedliner (Spray-in 33%/Drop-in 20%)
Tonneau (Hard 3%/Soft 10%)
Splash Guards 4%
CP360 40%

Right, but again that's pomelos to oranges. I'm talking about taking an FWD EcoBoost and upgrading it so it can make the most out of its 2k tow cap, or even just do better on long road trips. Not trying to aftermarket a 4k (which is impossible on a Maverick).

Unlike seemingly 99% of the people on this board, I don't "buy to sell."

I agree, I always keep my vehicles forever. I never even think about resale value. The Mav is replacing my wife's 1999 Windstar lol

Mine MAY replace my 1987 B2000 longbed but I'm not sure I can turn loose of it. I've had it since 1993.

I'm impressed! I have had my 2000 B3000 since December 1999, but you have me beat by a furlong.

Me neither and that is why I bought the 4k package on the XL. I needed the towing capacity, even if I didn't the added cooling is always good thing for the engine and transmission longevity as long as you keep up on your fluid changes and I still would have sprung for it anyways since I was not buying an ecoboost without AWD.

In the case of a FWD or hybrid adding the transmission cooler afterwards I totally agree.. It is definitely a good investment in your truck for long term use.

respectfully, that's an interesting conclusion but I believe a wrong one. I looked at this thoroughly and ordered a 4K truck. I am pretty certain you have never been able to buy the trailer brake controller separately.
Here is a VIN for you to run through the Ford as built database.

3FTTW8E38NRA96819

The pertinent parts of the VIN
(W8E)(3)

to interpret that section

The W8* applies to AWD or FWD
W8E = FWD
W8F = AWD

The number next to it denotes the engine type
3 = 2.5L hybrid
9 = 2.0L ecoboost

We've established that this VIN is for a 2.5L hybrid build, also know for sure they don't offer a 4k package on hybrid trucks. The attached pdf is from the shop manual and tells you exactly how to read these VIN numbers and the information on the sticker in the front door jams.

If you take that VIN and look it up here, you can also do this with the VIN of your truck
https://www.motorcraftservice.com/AsBuilt/

That will tell you modules and settings Ford built out of the factory for any truck. The address format is the following
xxx - xx - xx
xxx = is the actual module itself, if the truck has a trailer brake control module the value will be 791, AWD is 703, ABS is 760, etc.

If you run that VIN you'll see ford built it with a TRM module. There is no way it came with a trailer brake module from the factory unless Ford had offered them as separate option outside the 4k tow package.

Weird, but I'm rather certain that truck has a 4k towing package. You wasted a lot of time on that.

You can't get 4k towing period on any FWD Maverick because of the suspension system being different from AWD trucks. There is only one way an FWD is built with a trailer brake controller, it was offered as separate item at some point in 2022.

I was impatient and didn't type what I was thinking as another possibility which is that the as built you're looking at is wrong in some way or you're reading it wrong.

Here's the window sticker for that truck. It's an XL hybrid so I'm sure it doesn't have a trailer brake controller.

https://www.windowsticker.forddirect.com/windowsticker.pdf?vin=3FTTW8E38NRA96819

Again going back to your incorrect belief that it's possible to order a truck with the brake controller and not 4k. It's never been possible.
