How about to solve the flipping we have a $1k non refundable deposit?
That'd probably discourage a lot of ordinary buyers (especially since it just hands $1k of leverage to the dealer at delivery). While at the same time that amount is small enough it wouldn't affect the actual profitability of flipping unless they were ordering a substantial number of vehicles to be at risk of taking a loss should the market drop out.

THIS!!! Imagine giving the dealer a $1k non-refundable deposit, your truck shows up and he now wants $5-$10k over sticker. Sure you can still walk away but it'll cost you a grand and he'll go fleece some other sucker.

Talk about adding insult to injury!

At least in my area, Ford is running commercials for every vehicle they offer EXCEPT the Maverick. Which tells me they already know their '23 order books are going to fill quickly.
I’ve also noticed commercials for Escape & SUVs but not Maverick. I agree that Ford now has a pretty good idea of how many they can sell. I’m sure they have ways of estimating demand.

I also think there is huge pent-up demand for almost all brands of cars. I’ve been reading for several years that the average age of US cars is rising. And the past two years where many new cars are pretty much unavailable and/or unaffordable has to increase demand. I know we’re hoping we get our maverick before my wife’s ’09 Saturn gives up the ghost! So I think Maverick is still new, exciting and affordable. Ford can sell every Maverick they can build. So order early!!!

To slow down flipping, one order per household. Wouldn't eliminate it but would stop the going to multiple dealers to see which comes in first.

I don't see how that discourages anyone - it's a depost applied towards the purchase it's not extra $ above the MSRP cost. But, I'd say a $1k deposit is OK as long as, in writing, the dealer agrees that there will not be any markup or 'added features' that they like to plunk on and charge for. Without that agreement the dealer could just say yeah it's 10K more than MSRP and if you don't buy it we're keeping your deposit.

What if you legitimately need more than one for your household? What if you're a small business, but not large enough a number for a full fleet buy account? Really, Ford is under no obligation to ensure that all who want a Maverick may receive one under equitable distribution, especially on a mass market vehicle they're going to produce in the hundred(s) of thousands.

I'm not saying Ford should do that. Just that it's probably the best way to slow down flipping. I also don't think the things you mentioned are that common though. For businesses that need multiples there are fleet programs.

I really don't think any of these factors are Ford's problem though.

For non-livery minimum is 15 vehicles registered in operation or having purchased/leased 5 new in the past year/MY to even qualify for a Fleet ID.

I think the true extent of Flipping IRL is far less than some people here are making it out to be and the effect on overall sales volume. Even IF hundreds of people ordered early with sole intent of buying to resell to make a few thousand $- it still represents a drop in the bucket of orders in the big picture of 100k+ built annually.

Whole other part of this discussion is people who may well want a Mav but aren't willing to wait a year on one. You gotta be pretty damned motivated and dead set on the idea that THIS is the hill you'll wait on. I just don't personally know a lot willing to do that.

I said it earler, unfortunately the only way to stop the flipping is for Ford to substantially raise the price. $10k ADM must be way more than Ford's profit with all the work it takes to produce a vehicle. Ford's CFO must be upset he is giving away profit to flippers and dealers for free.

And what about those of us who need more than one vehicle in a household?

My wild guess is that hybrid orders with be closed first. Before the end of this year. EcoBoost two months after hybrids.
Now as far as Maverick being so popular, that's true on this site. In the real world not so much. I live in the desert of So.Ca only seen four so far. On vacation here in South Dakota for two months now seen only three. Two were from out of state.
I don't for see all those under 35 year olds Ford says are buying waiting 10+ months for a vehicle. I know I sure didn't at that age.
Now me I'm on the list for a 2023 hybrid with Tim in Salina.
I can wait 10+ months as I have a 2020 Escape hybrid. I can try out a 2022 hybrid as my son who ordered in October a Maverick Lariat is in production now.
So if you are like me most folks you talk to about a Maverick never heard of them or only know about the Maverick car from the 70's.
