If this is a silly question I am sorry. I am not a mechanic or engineer. I can watch a few YouTube videos and basically become an expert though. I want to add the sport mode and eco mode to my FX4. could the programing for those two drive modes possibly not be optimized for the different gear ratio of the FX4. Could those setting possibly cause problems long term (like sand mode on dry pavement). Maybe that is why they are not included with the FX4. Again I don't know what all the drive modes change in the engine and what different gearing would do. Just a thought that maybe someone who knows might be able to explain.

My guess is they're not included because 7 modes is a lot to press through. I wish they included a dial.

IIRC FX4 has the same gear ratios. It's 4K towing that's different.

It could be. I have both so I know I have the different ratio's but I don't really know what that translates to in the drive modes. Hoping it means nothing.

It’s completely fine to unlock Sport and Eco. They behave basically identically.

If this is something that one does not feel totally comfortable or willing to do themselves, what would be their options for having it done for them? I'm assuming this is something Ford dealers will not touch. Thanx. Asking for a friend. :)

That's a good question - would a dealer do it for you? I'd love to have them unlocked but don't want to risk screwing anything up or more importantly invalidating my warranty.

My AWD XL w/4k came with sport mode standard, so I don't think there is anything on the FX4 w/4k package that would prevent sport mode from working properly. If I recall, the difference between FX4 and AWD is that FX4 has a metal skid plate, tow hooks, better tires and a beefed up suspension. FX4 also trades sport and eco drive modes for mud/ruts and sand/snow. As we now know, all drive modes can be activated on all trims/packages.

My XL AWD 4K has all seven modes activated and working. I know I will rarely, if ever, use mud/ruts or sand/snow, but it's nice knowing they're there if I need them. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I like having all of them as well. I use Eco on my FX4 quite often and Sport every once in a while for a few minutes. It burns quite a bit of gas 😂

This is what I was looking for. Thank you.

Bob, getting a Forscan license and OBDII adapter is about $70. Once you open the Forscan program and plug in the cable all you really have to do is click a button to enable each of these modes. The original steps needed with changing registry values that you can find on these forums has now been simplified with a simple ENABLED or DISABLED button.

I decide to do the extra drive modes. It took a while beause I backed everything up to the laptop. Once it was done it only took a minute to go to the setting and make the changes. Only two values got changed.

It was scary because it came up with a warning that I had a mistyped hash tag. I canceled and redid it and got the same warning. I proved it the second time and my instrument cluster went haywire. Check engine lights and a few yellow warnings. Forscan said to turn truck off and start it up. Soon as I did that all errors cleared and I have the additional drive modes.

I will say that I probably shouldn't have. Sport mode is every responsive and more fun compared to normal drive mode but I can almost see the fuel gage going down as I drive.

Thank you. I am giving it some thought. Seems I will have plenty of time to think. LOL

Yeah, the wife has sport mode in her Cherokee and it is a gas guzzler for sure. I actually would want to do it for ECO mode but the simple fact of the matter is I do not drive that much so the savings would be minimal at best for effort. Thank you.
