True, but for me the magic is the Kicker Key 200.4, specifically the DSP.

I replaced all six speakers and added a sub, but the DSP and EQ that the Key 200.4 provides really made the system in my opinion. Adding premium speakers and not "feeding" them properly with an EQ curve they can use effectively will lessen their benefits. I can say with confidence that mid-grade speakers + (some brand of DSP) is superior to stock headunit + high-end speakers.
Where did you mount the DSP?

I expected it to be terrible due to all the youtube reviews I saw pre-purchase. I was pleasantly surprised how much better it was than my last car. It's not the best by any means but much better than some alternatives out there.
Same thoughts here. It’s not great, but far down the list of things to spend money on to upgrade.

I highly recommend swapping out every single piece of stereo component you can. The only thing I am HOPING they come out with next, it a better plug and play screen and module to swap over. If companies like kenwood, alpine, etc would invest in there kits, all of our problems would be solved. We could have features like wireless CarPlay, phenomenal pre amp outputs and internal sound processors, and HD radio, etc. It’s got to show up sometime, but until then, this system I put in is the best it’s going to get.

My XLT's stereo sounds okay to me, but then again I'm not one of those people that likes my music real loud. My main gripe aside from the fact that there is no CD player is that there is no track selection. When I have my USB flash drive plugged in and I want to listen to a certain song, I have to press the << or >> to go to the song I want. My Escape had a number pad that I could press in the track number I wanted and go right to the song I wanted.

Press the browse button on the screen.. Then press search. All your music will be indexed. The song list for the album and the ability to search by artist, album, genre, song title.

Fade out your rear speakers, they are stealing power. Put all your power into the front speakers which have a proper baffle which is the interior of the panel.

Yep, I actually don't even have them on because they are right against rear passenger heads/ears and my son is sensitive to noise. My daughter actually pointed out the bass thing to me when she borrowed it. I rarely use a radio so thankfully I don't have any skin in this audio game.

I knew it would sound like crap!! as my 2019 f150 with the upgrade stereo is crap. too bad. first thing I did on f150 was had a bazooka powered sub 6" put under back seat and 100% better, really cant afford to put in all new stuff. I had a bose system in my old 2007 Silverado, and it was GREAT, even the B&O system stinks, I guess i will have to do that to maverick too, If we ever get one !! on month 10 nothing yet!!

Can you please do a write-up? I would love to see the door covers off and where you applied the sound deadening materials. How much weight did that all add?
There are several on this site, that is what I used to do my swap and theirs have pictures and step by step instructions which mine wouldn't have since I am done with the project already.

Replace your rear speakers, tap the wires while there, install sub.

You did this yourself or you paid a professional to do this and it was 120 WITH the sound deadening material?
Door speakers you can 100% do yourself, it is literally five bolts, three screws, unplug the old speaker, plug in the new one, and put it all back together. If you don't feel comfortable stripping and splicing wires, and slight electrical work then I would suggest you pay someone to replace the tweeters for you, it probably wouldn't cost much, around $100 or less if I had to guess.

I think I've found the optimal setup to get the most out of the stock speaker setup, here is the setup:

1. Go to audio settings, change the audio to point at the driver
2. Go to balance/fade and move the audio so the majority of it comes from the front speakers
3. Max treble, default bass and mid somewhere inbetween

If you do these settings, your stock stereo will drastically improve.

Thanks you, still waiting for my maverick so I’ll do it when it comes in. I was more surprised if that included the sound deadening material
