For what it is worth, I picked the Mav up Friday night after the TSB 22-2124 update for the cold start surging idle issue and drove it home. I had it in Normal driving mode the whole time and I am pretty sure I can back up the comments about the braking system feeling smoother after this update. I have put around 40 or so additional miles on it this last weekend and it really does seem quite a bit better.

It seems this TSB may have touched more than just the cold idle issue. The service order from my dealer stated that the TSB 22-2124 - operation MT222124 included the reprogramming of the PCM, SOBDM-C, BECM, and BECMB. Also, my FordPass App now has a Horn & Lights button that was definitely not there until the update was applied.

This TSB was for Maverick Hybrids built on or before March 9th, 2022. Anything after that should already have the update. The update is dealer only and cannot just be downloaded. https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...-hybrid-idle-surge-fix-software-update.12761/

Final note: If you are in the hybrid build date range for this TSB(all hybrids built up through 3-9-22) and you go to schedule the work with your dealer, they are instructed to ask you if you have had the idle surging issue. How you answer that question may affect whether or not they are willing to perform the TSB.

This TSB is dealer only. It seems OTA(over the air) updates on the Maverick are limited to things like the radio head unit updates.

Interesting. I took delivery of my hybrid maverick last week. The brakes have always been smooth and I've always had the horn/lights button on the app. As far as I know, it didn't get the TSB update but maybe the dealer did it before I took delivery

When was your Maverick built? It probably has the updated software from the factory.

Got it. Thanks.

My fordpass has horn/lights as well. Is there a way to check which is my latest TSB update? Mine was built early March, want to confirm this has been installed.

Mine (built in mid-February) has had the very low speed brake grab twice in the 1200 miles I've driven it and between that and my Ford Pass App not having the horns and lights thing clearly indicates that my truck doesn't have that TSB update yet. No cat glowing issue to-date but I might go ahead and contact a local dealer's service dept and see if I can get that update without the cat issue.

I've driven many Hybrid cars as I used to be a valet driver part time. The Maverick doesn't seem to be any worse than a Prius as far as regen brake engagement in addition to hydraulic braking.

When you lightly tap on the brakes at a slow speed, it is normal for it to stick and feel like it's grabbing on at first. That's just how all Hybrids/EVs are (Except Tesla, they have the best braking feel.)

In fact, newer naturally aspirated Volkswagen Jettas/Passats have the worst "brake stick" out of any car. I can't count how many times I drove a Jetta up to a customer and right when I came to a stop, the car abruptly braked at the last minute.

What seems a little strange though is when you are going about 40mph, see a red light up ahead, and begin braking, it brakes normally but right when you are about to stop going less than 3mph, it feels like the regen disengages and then you have to press on the brake pedal a little harder at that point to get it to stop.
This is not true of all hybrids. Braking on my Honda Clarity plug-in-hybrid is indistinguishable from normal hydraulic braking. No noticeable transition from regen to hydraulic.

It looks like you guys answered a question I had about the updates. My truck just got shipped and should have all the latest updates to this point if I understand correctly.

Write to Ford at the link on the side with their logo. I have the same problem and they got right on it, found a dealer where the service department answered the phone (unlike Scarsdale Ford), and even made me an appointment. Of course it's not until April 11 but I don't think it's a dangerous condition that demands immediate attention. There are some comments here by some people who sound like they know what they're talking about, read what they have to say. And watch it in the rain. Pumping the brakes when wet helped but didn't eliminate the jolting altogether. I've got 2K miles on mine and I haven't rear ended anyone yet, so there.
Good luck,
Randall

Hello Will,

Update: Braking Problem
So as you said, a Ford rep did get in touch with me, we went over that same litany of problems and she said Ford was aware of complaints about the brake issue but my scraping was unknown to them. She even made an appointment with a local Ford dealer. I had to wait 3 weeks. Fine. I take it in this morning and the guy in service never heard of the problem, looked up recalls, found nothing.

Knowing nothing about it they have to track the problem down from scratch. Sooo, maybe they'll call today, definitely tomorrow. I had kinda assumed the Ford service network would have issued a bulletin with some repair guidance.

No such luck,

Randall

So this was my experience after Ford got in touch with me and made an appointment with a dealer in nearby Yonkers, not the dealer I bought from which is out of state.

I had the two issues with the brakes; the grabbing brakes and the occasional need for a sudden brake. Dealer could not duplicate the problem, all his diagnostics showed nothing wrong. Great, how many times have you heard that in life in general?

I had a third problem with a slight scraping noise in the rear passenger side upon starting forward. Also happened when coming to a stop. Both occurred only occasionally. Again, dealer could not duplicate, everything checks out fine.

Okay, what's curios is that the Ford rep who made the appointment says to me after I described my symptoms, she says, yes, we've heard the brakes issues before and the scraping was new to them.

That sounds to me like they've got a fix to the brakes to share with the dealer at least, why the hell are they scheduling me an appointment to fix if it's just a characteristic of the truck? Dealer says he scoured the Ford recalls and issues bulletins and found nothing relating to any of the above.

So it was a waste of time. Like many of you here, I've become accustomed to the behavior and and have just become more sensitive to the feedback from my braking and it happens rarely now, but once in awhile she has her own mind and you just have to be sensitive to your braking.

Someone with experience with hybrids here explained it as probably having something to do with the braking handoff from the hydraulic brakes to the electric brakes. That really is what it feels like to me but I know nothing about the mechanics of this stuff.

So I live with it. Down the road when I take it in for an oil change I'll ask them to look at it again and it does seem to happen more infrequently but boy oh boy be careful when your brakes are wet, that's when it gets tricky which is another thing I've read here. Hit your brakes hard to dry them before you go anywhere.

But let me be clear, I love the truck, I get on average 38, 39 mpg, sometimes I see 50 and that really makes this boy smile.

Bottom line: I got no help from Ford but it's probably just the way the thing works. So adapt to it.
