If you know why is your confidence in eCVTs low? Seems like a unjustified generalization. IE- my car burns oil so I don’t feel confident in engines.
I bet when he bought that Subaru everyone told him how much better CVT was than automatic transmission and then it turned out to be a steaming pile of garbage, which is why he doesn’t want to see the words CVT anywhere near his next vehicle, ‘new and improved’ or not. Again, I think it’s more a preference than a this is right and that’s wrong.

That’s all I was looking for and he just said he prefers a standard gear box. The mechanicals of an eCVT are far grater than regular gear boxes. I predicted belt issues on the old style CVTs when they first started using them. All belts fail eventually. While the eCVT has been around for well over a decade. Either way people like what they like.

That doesn't describe my experience, or the experience of anyone I've known, who's driven the eCVT planetary gear system, Maverick or otherwise. I understand the Nissan style band is a garbage fire, but the Toyota/Ford system is great. Everyone I've let drive my Maverick has remarked on how amazingly smooth and peppy everything is.
I second this statement. I drove a Ford CMax for 6 years before getting an Ecoboost Maverick, due to lifestyle changes... The CMax's transmission was hands down smoother and more responsive than the Maverick's 8-speed. That car couldn't tow 4,000 lbs like my Maverick Ecoboost though.

Everyone wanting to buy a hybrid should be thankful for all the misinformation on the ecvt transmission. Think how hard it would be to get a hybrid if everyone that avoided it because of the transmission, was actually trying to get one too. It would be MY24 before Ford caught up and you got yours. So yeah, tell them that transmission is lousy.

Had to have the cvt replaced in my Subaru at 90k miles so I don’t feel too confident in them
Did you replace the fluid in your Subaru cvt trans (ever?). Check fluid level (ever?). I have Honda CR-V replaced fluid at 60k & 120k miles. And will probably move next change up by 10k miles. I will decide the interval for the hybrid maverick after I get one. I do not intend to haul big loads or tow 2k trailers much and am thinking 50k miles. If I tow or even operate in hot conditions without towing I will reduce that interval. Two three phase electric motors being cooled by that fluid. (Perhaps not overheating the transaxle fluid was ONE of the reasons the all-wheel drive and 4k tow options were removed???)

They should have just called it a PGT (Planetary Gear Transmission) and marketed it with a badass emblem of Atlas holding a gear shaped planet on his back
Absolutely getting away from the name CVT would have been a smart idea.

Why change anything for reverse? Keep it simple, like it is now. How fast do you drive in reverse? Watch Weber auto videos and you will change your mind, I bet.

Anyone have any input on why eCVT with discrete gear ratios would be beneficial over the current eCvt?
The only meaningful change would be the end user experience. Particularly to a customer who's coming from a non-hybrid drivetrain. Previously, it wasn't much of an issue since the Ford Hybrid customers were coming specifically for the Hybrid drivetrain and paying a premium for it. Maverick customers aren't necessarily coming for the hybrid, it just so happens to be the base powertrain. Someone coming from a conventional 6 speed might be turned off on a road test by a lack of gears or a perceived "Droning" of the gas engine maintaining a constant RPM.

Functionally, there's nothing different. Even the RPM changes/"Shift points" are nothing more than a software trick.

Ok, gotta ask, what is it about using the Traction motor for reverse don't you like?

Just curious, of all the concerns I heard from people with both the eCVT and conventional belt driven CVT's, I've never heard anyone complain there wasn't a dedicated reverse.

Normally, in a conventional automatic, the planetary gearset is held in a way that creates reverse rotation through the output shaft. The eCVT does the same thing, but instead of using hydraulically applied clutches and bands to manage the gearset, 2 electric motors do that job.
