Hi.

probably is a common question.

I already did my order ( XLT, ecoboost, tow pack, luxury pack, 360 and slide back window) but in my mind i still thinking about put or not the 4x4 and the FX4….

Can anyone tell me your opinion about that?? To give some lights!!

pros and cons?
Specs for 4x4 against fwd?

thanks a lot!!!

If you don't plan on towing in snow, mud, sand, etc. you're good to go. AWD will help with the towing if street surfaces get dicey. Skip FX4, it adds very little true capability given the fact one has to upgrade to an XLT to even have the option to select it, then gets to pay an additional $800 for the privilege.

it seems like the FX4 package will get a "heavy duty" cooling fan and radiators as opposed to the "high capacity/upgraded" ones standard with the 4k. I also prefer the wheels, tow hooks, skid plate, and some other fancy drive modes that I'm not savvy enough to appreciate without using them first. I'm intending to use this truck for everything from hauling small boats to pulling deer and elk out of the mountains, so I figure I might as well beef up what I can.

That said, full disclosure, I understand the basics of vehicles, but any real specifications and ratios mean as much to me as what ever those numbers are on my computer's graphics card.

As a starting point, I think it would be good to realize that fx4 is not a "4x4", but rather an AWD system.

If you really need 4wd then just get a Ranger. After having a 4x4 truck for 15 years and a AWD suv for 4 years I realized it’s not really necessary unless your in a state with weather conditions, plan on towing, or going off/road. Plus AWD and 4x4 drivetrains cost more to maintain and get less mpg.
This maverick will be my first hybrid and FWD vehicle. I plan on changing only the tires for better traction.

Good question Manuel. Looks like your rig will be set up nice.

I'm just going to buy the skid plates and bolt them in myself!

I would add fx4 to every XLT Ecoboost for the in dash screen alone. If you're not doing the 4k towing package, the extra cooling bits are nice for longevity. And skid plates aren't cheap aftermarket. I think the FX4 package is a value

Go sticker a Ranger 4x4.and then compare it to a Maverick awd.
Huge gap in pricing.
This is the cost of a base XLT 4x4 ranger.
you can get a fully loaded optioned out Maverick Lariat AWD and Tow package for $38k and some change.

But there are other differences, height, entry angle etc etc. I see your point but there are reasons why the Ranger still exists.
34.8o for the Ranger vs 21.6o on the Maverick for example.

Your arguing for basic need 4x4 vs. AWD but not everyone wants a stripped down base model Ranger 4x4 and not have the features they want

Im going to slap the Bronco Sport 1.5” lift kit, shocks if needed and a tune. Another 1.5” of ground clearance will be nice. That’s if no one comes out with a Maverick specific kit.

Seems unlikely that Ford would keep all these different parts in stock. My money would be that the 4K and FX4 package simply duplicate some of each other's options.

As I am fond of saying every drives differently. If I was in solid shape I’d still run my diesel cj5. It went anywhere I’d care to go.

the thing I do not like about AWD is when you are stuck, you are stuck. I almost always stayed in 2wH unless crawling then 2wL so if I screwed the pooch I could lock the hubs and walk beside it to get out of my mess.

If you go for an XL Ranger instead you can get an FX4 package for about couple hundred less than you speced there, and you still get cruise control. :)

Last year I did just that, actually got it for about $34k, but that was before the whole vehicle shortage actually kicked into full gear.

Have at it, the resell value would be horrendous. I’d never buy a base model truck just to say I have 4x4 unless I knew I was keeping it or needed a work truck.
You’d be better off buying a used 3-5 year old truck optioned out,, 4wd and more capable for the same price. 🤷‍♂️

I would not be surprised if they were the same upgraded radiator and cooling fan on the tow and Fx4 but just used different words to describe them but I could be wrong. Agree that the FX4 package is good value for some buyers.
