I'm thinking there is less difference between top tier fuel brands, than between a top tier and an "anything they can get" station.
I'll take that a bit farther: the variation among top tier, and the variation among not, are both small compared to the gap between the least top tier and the worst other.

(kind of like the difference between coffee being 100% arabica, or not [yet Starbucks is proof that you can ruin pure arabica by overcasting!])

Forgive me please. I was unaware that "top-tier" was an official ranking
not a ranking, but a standard.

Especially when you compare good fuel to a tank of sand and water with a little gasoline thrown in. That's happened to me, but never at a top tier station.

So many uninformed people think when gas prices are high, the stations are "gouging" them.

The only gouging going on is the profits on Big Gulps, Cheetos and rubber hot dogs.

Percentage wise, gas stations make tons more profit on these things than on gas.
I don’t know if I’d go as far as to call this price gouging but there is the practice of when wholesale prices are going up they charge what they will pay and when prices are going down they charge what they have paid.
Either way the consumer gets screwed .

Gas brand is like Astrology for car guys. I mean, look how many guys claim that the top tier detergents will keep their valves clean....while running DI engines that dont spray the fuel on the valves, and thus, receive no cleaning, hence why DI engines need periodic valve cleaning done.

Unless the station has a bad gas mixture, you wont notice any real difference.

Sinclair works for me. Also the best deal with Sinclair Mobile Advantage car.

"Sinclair gasoline is classified as Top Tier gas, which means it meets higher standards for detergent additives that help keep engines clean and improve performance."

Alright I can’t be the only one that notices this 😂

I swear my Maverick gets different MPG depending on where I fill up. Some tanks feel like they last forever and other times the fuel disappears way faster even though I’m driving the same routes.

Sometimes the truck even feels smoother after certain fill ups and other stations make it feel kinda sluggish for no reason.
I’ve noticed:
  • better MPG from some stations
  • worse MPG from others
  • different engine feel/sound
  • some gas seems to burn way quicker
Curious if anyone else has noticed the same thing or if this is all just in our heads lol
  • What stations have been the best for you guys?
  • Which ones have been the worst?
  • Does Costco actually live up to the hype?
  • And is Chevron/Shell actually better or just expensive branding?

Interested to see if there’s actually a pattern here or if we’re all just gas station conspiracy theorists now 😭

Chevron definitely gives me more mpg over Valero.

FWIW, in my 40+ years of driving,
Shell gives me the best mileage most consistently. Chevron's a close second. Since moving to Ohio I have no access to Chevron anymore. I tried "Kroger" fuel. Total garbage. Probably the ethanol. All anecdotal, but Shell is it for me.

FYI, if you get the Shell app, you can consistently get 10cents off and on Sundays you can stack an extra 22cents off until November. 32cents is solid savings for, IMO, the best fuel.

I get the self-fulfilling nature here, but it's been decades. It continues with the Mav. If I top 500 miles (ecoboost) it invariably is Shell fuel.

You’re not the only oneI’ve noticed it too, although I think a lot of it comes down to seasonal fuel blends, ethanol content, weather, and how fresh the fuel is at a particular station. That said, I’ve generally had good luck with Costco and Shell.
Big one for sure. I wish Sam's Club would do top tier like Costco, but I buy fuel there probably 75% of the time because it's has to be the highest turnover pump in town, and it's usually $0.20-$0.40 cheaper than the other stations.

My no science opinion living in the midwest is there is something off with Casey's fuel. 27 years I've been driving now, and I swear they have always had an additive pack that reduces fuel economy somehow.

I've read Costco is top-tier gas.👍🏻

Costco gas is officially certified as TOP TIER™ Gasoline. Both their regular unleaded and premium grades exceed the EPA's detergent requirements by five times, which helps minimize engine deposits and maintain optimal vehicle performance.

Sadly Sam's club is not. 🙁
Sam's is part of Walmart!!!

Casey's (a Pizza place) just bought most of stripes stations) in Texas and is expanding big time here. I think Casey's also bought CEFO (Charles E Fields Co?). All are getting pizza ovens!!!!
