Thanx!! Yes, it does have a repair mode. Never used it and often wondered how effective it is but will certainly try that in the near future and will report back here on the results.

I’ve heard, from here I think that when desulphating it’s best to have the battery out of the vehicle, true?

Left the truck on trickle overnight. This morning the Genius reported a full charge. A check of the battery voltage measured at the battery terminals with my Fluke meter reads 12.6V.

Conventional wisdom indicates my battery is at 75-80% SOC. I am assuming the BMS stopped any further charge due to factory programming. I am also assuming the battery is good condition as it was able to accept the maximum SOC permitted by the BMS.

Now the truck is locked and going to sit that way until I need it tomorrow. We'll see how things go from there.

Cheers all and thanx for all the great replies and help. Kudos.
So if 12.6 after charging, which means slightly inflated and actual was lower than that - your charger must have decided it didn't want to go higher.
Battery is already a problem to some level.

If you are connecting to battery directly - the truck BMS is out of the picture, so no limiting.
Doesn't matter which side of battery sensor you are on either - that doesn't control anything, only measures current. And it doesn't measure charging with key off. Which is correct.

Ditto SafetyGuy since your charger has repair mode.
It may have already started in on it if charging didn't take long.
Probably have to peak at their manual as to how they tell you that with likely limited lights, unless it actually has one for Repair Mode.
I have to remind myself each time, since I have 2 brands, and one pulses the green low/high during repair - but forgot how it tells you it did all it could.

The charger manual will state how serious of a process they do, if it requires that.
High amp/voltage could be a problem left in the vehicle if that's what they do - I don't recall the Genius stating it was required.
So maybe really smart and they are gentle when in vehicle - or they don't get so high anyway. Or more likely I don't recall correctly!
I thought the bigger ones had a button to kick off the repair mode - my 2A model just throws it in after a charge, no button.

I know older charger manuals always seemed to say remove, probably because they didn't stop the high amps when appropriate - and could cause off-gassing, a problem in the car with leads right there causing a potential spark if removed incorrectly.

I have read on other threads here that it might be best due to the manner in which the repair mode works.

That said, I also would check the manual to see if any guidance is given regarding use of the battery maintenance mode.

Thinking about it, I think at the very least I would disconnect the battery from the truck and then do a maintenance or de-suphation cycle, just in case...so, good question!

Just make sure to follow the truck manuals direction when disconnecting or connecting the battery.

Not going to sulfate the battery. Thanx to the posters here I did some research which opened my eyes a bit on the process so I consulted manuals and AI to learn. As always, conflicting information but that is the internet' s middle name.

However, it does seem to be a slow process and one best performed on a spare battery because, yes, it does seem best to remove the battery for a period of time. That makes sense from a safety perspective.

Removing the battery just does not work for me right now as it is my only one. The conflicting info seems to be on the advantages one will get from doing this on a AGM battery. Lead Acid batteries seem to be better suited with this process. Opinions, opinions but that is OK. i think charging the battery as much as it is capable and locking the truck up in the garage for 12 hours will be big help over previous and I will take the win.

As promised, a quick follow up. It's been 9 days since I fully charged the battery again and did a sleep cycle with doors locked overnight.

Observations:

Truck now seems to charge around 14.3V (+/-) as opposed to 15.1 (+/-) before all this.

A/S/S is now working for the first time in over a year.

After a short drive the battery will read 12.6V (+/-) at rest and the 12V power point will remain energized running my 2 channel dash cam for 1 1/2 hours with little drop in voltage.

After being parked for 2 - 3 days the interior lights will turn on with opening the door. Before, after one day, no bueno. After 3 days battery reads 12.1V (+/-).

This is a huge improvement. Thoughts?

Because you have a full battery

Depending upon your view.

Awesome news, it sounds like it is going in the right direction.

I feel the lower charge level is appropriate, as your battery is not as discharged as it once was.

On another note, please have a read on another important battery thread, where a possible solution has been given as to another reason all our batteries are not being charged fully, and this may help you as well!

This may be something we all do to knowingly help chargenour batteries properly!

Note, this is not a fix for a sudden parasitic drain, which infrequently is reported.

Cheers

Andy

Ready for the additional fun?
And you thought you were having fun with the battery now - you ain't seen nothing yet!

since my truck went into deep sleep mode 22 hrs last saturday after i got the truck back from the dealer friday afternoon declaring my battery was good, and my brand new ancel battery tester said it was also good, i charged it to full last night (connected directly to the battery terminals) and tried the bms reset this morning. i never saw a flashing battery symbol, but after i left and locked the truck, the 12v powerpoint stayed powered (which it does not do in deep sleep mode). it's showing high 12s. i don't see how it can hurt anything. it's battery #2, a motorcraft 470CCA replacement that is 13 months old. time will tell.

You connected directly to the battery??
😱 OH No, tell me it isn't so.
You threw caution to the wind and didn't you heed the dire warnings of the pearl clutches, about the terrible things that's going to happen if you hook your miniscule charger directly to the battery....Neither did I
🤣🤣🤣
I've had mine hooked up directly to my battery now for 2 years. I did it because, I wanted MOST efficient route with the LEAST amount of resistance between the small charger and the battery. The posts underneath the hood are great for a jump start but not for a small amp battery charger. Seems common sense to me. Just don't tell the BMS you did this.🤣

I've only had to charge it twice, when I had fuse 11/12 installed and I opened the door and the interior light didn't go on

yeah, i wanted to be in front of the hardware since i was going to do the bms reset afterwards.

edit.. yeah i have the noco G5. i don't get a warm and fuzzy charging underhood, but i had gotten used to it until the truck started acting funny(-er than usual) 2 weeks ago. that's why i took it to the dealer last thursday.

If you take a look at my picture my charger sets right next to the seat, in the little storage area by the door. If I ever have to use it I have it very handy.
It will be perfectly fine hooked up directly to the battery. I have an original flooded battery in my 2023 hybrid and I've got 26,000 miles on it. I don't drive it a lot and it's still plugging along. Knock on woodšŸ¤ž

Since the BMS Relearn isn't a nightly thing (still can't decide if a time or mileage type cycle) - it was probably sitting on an old SOC% after they did a recharge, and low enough it did DSM for modem.
Now the battery saver functions for lights/power port are Voltage based, so in theory that could be above 12.1V while the SOC% is on a delayed effect.

Curious what your Resistance reading was on 13 months old?

Perfectly fine charger hookup. Truck doesn't log Amp hours of charging anyway with key off.
And that would be a mistake if it did. Then it would charge less while driving.

I’ll still never understand this. Years ago, late 70’s-early 80’s, I’d charge my car batteries +to+, -to-, On the battery itself, no + to +, - to frame. Even jump starting, same. I’m still here to talk about it! šŸ¤”šŸ˜‰
