Great share… thanks! Similar issue with regular Phillips screwdrivers on many Japanese marques; you need JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) or the heads strip out. “Right tool for the job” is important.

When I saw the picture of the plus set I said “I think I have that set in my tool box.” But nope, it’s just the regular Torx set. I did install the tailgate assist with it and didn’t strip any of the Torx fittings, but I’m sure I did some damage to them.

Oh boy I get to buy some more tools - already have BSF and Whitworth for old British motorcycles, SAE for my Jeep and Metric for my Japanese motorcycle and various bicycles, etc. Also have Philips and JIS and Pozidrive and "Reed & Prince" screwdrivers, "Security" Torx bits, etc., etc. Off to Amazon to order Torx+ - what fun!

I started this thread because a lot of folks don't understand the differences between Torx & Torx PLUS.
Ford uses Torx Plus on our Mavericks.
The difference between regular Torx and Torx Plus is pretty significant. It becomes a difference between stripping out the bolt and not stripping it. Here are some pictures and a short 9-second video.
Yesterday I received my Torx Plus bit set. $21.06 on Amazon.

This video shows the slop using a Torx in a Torx plus fitting. For those thinking it. Yes they are the same size. T45/TP45
Excellent post, Glen! I have the same set and it is important to know the different between torx, torx plus, and torx security!

Wonder if the Mav has any external Torx Plus or any "Tamper Resistant" Torx Plus fasteners (5 lobes vs. 6 with a pin in the middle, requires yet another type of tool).

John,
All the exterior bolts except the one that I'm pointing to in the engine compartment, are Torx Plus. The one in the engine compartment is a Torx security bolt.

Wow, thanks for this. I had no idea. No wonder I didn't like the fit of my Torx bits when I removed the bed tie down brackets in my Maverick (to install a toolbox). I've ordered a small set of Plus bits from Amazon to add to that toolbox.

John,
You can check Home Depot or Lowe's. They have them advertised. They don't carry them on the shelf in the store. They still have to be ordered online.
In my situation. I found Amazon just as easy and I use Amazon gift cards that I buy in advance or get as gifts. That way I don't have to have my credit card on file with PayPal, Home Depot or Lowe's..etc. I call it limited exposure.
Quick side note: Of course it's smart to be concerned about credit card fraud, but keep in mind that the card holder is never held liable for any unauthorized use. Worst case, if the customer is grossly irresponsible, the bank can charge them $50. That's it.

Again, I'm not saying people shouldn't be careful, just that there's no need to be overly concerned about it.

There's no need to leave a card on file with retailers, because (at least in my experience) the card info auto-fills, even the security code.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...
