While Hyundai has certainly improved, I owned one of the first models back in the 1980s. My ex-wife wanted "a red one" and against my better judgement, I bought it. XLS trim; I forget the model. It was a complete POS and so yes, I now have a bias. Build quality was just awful.

Looks like the Santa Cruz was a decent vehicle although the 22-23 models had powertrain issues. They weren't selling very many of them which is likely why they were pulled.
It was probably an Excel. They were junk.

If Hyundai had brought out the Santa Cruz closer to the concept show car (2015) in time, I think that by the time the Maverick came on the scene, they might have been more more successful. Perhaps even bringing a hybrid to market by then. Hyundai blew it by hesitating so long to bring the concept to market. I do applaud them for keeping it somewhat similar to the concept although it was not as good looking.

The one big thing that Hyundai has is a 10 year 100K warranty on everything it builds. No other manufacturer does that.
KIA does that too

Same….once Hyundai got involved in the 90s they changed Kia into something Kia “was not”. The original Kia’s got phased out for the non-Hyundai competitor Soul and the Jetta hunter 1st generation Forte (I believe that’s when the former Audi A series design engineer was sent in by Mr Hyundai)

For some reason I always see people say bring back brat lol it’s looks eh
Subaru could and should compete in this space, but only if it is a Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid, and they get that from Toyota. Automakers can't compete in every space in the market but they also tend to be a bit myopic. I would have bought the SC had it a Good Performing (MPG) Hybrid Option.

Hybrid is what sold me on the Maverick.

Also, had the Honda Ridgeline offered either a Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid, it would have received full consideration from me. In Fact, that would have been my Ideal Truck if it also had updated Tech.

I'm happy with my Maverick, but I could have / Would have been with the Ridgeline / Santa Cruz / Subaru had they been available. Because of my High MPG requirement, I had only one choice, the Maverick.

Being a hybrid truck is the *only* reason I got a Maverick (ok two). It was actually despite it being a Ford and being so feature-poor for the price.

I'd be a lot happier with less tech if it all actually worked reliably.

True. But Kia is the "budget" division of Hyundai while Genesis is the upscale division
So how does that affect their offering 10 Year / 100,000 Mile Warranties????

The sport track was a good vehicle. But it just didn’t have “IT”. Same with the Santa Cruz. A good vehicle. It’s even better than the Maverick in some areas. But it doesn’t have “it”. The Maverick is greater than the sum of its parts. You might not quite be able to put your finger on it. But the Maverick come out ahead of the Santa Cruz by a significant margin Because it has “IT”. Ford learned from the explorer. Ford knows Trucks. Hyundai shied away from the truck label with the Santa Cruz. But forward leaned into it with the Maverick.
Did somebody just call a Hyundai a good vehicle ?

It doesn't. I just see Kia and Hyundai as the same company. That's all. No biggie
Yet Ford is the Winner every Year of # of Trucks Manufactured and Sold, Not GM.

Seems you can't buy a new Kia at a Hyundai Dealership, and you can't buy a new Hyundai at a Kia Dealership.

Seems they have their own product lines and make their own marketing decisions.

Your Ignorance doesn't change facts on the ground.

it was rumored long before then maybe around 2009,funny thing was the boys in stealership had absolutely no interest in it,yesterday was looking at used cars and found out the salesmen knew hardly anything about the vehicles they were trying to sell.

From https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-advice/are-kia-and-hyundai-the-same-company-91169

Q: Are Kia and Hyundai the same company?

A: The short answer is yes; both South Korean-based companies are part of the broader Hyundai Motor Group family which, of course, includes a lot more than just car-making.

In fact, with 463 offices in 43 countries and around 300,000 employees, the group is actively working as a partner on transport and mobility concepts in varied fields including road, personal and even aviation mobility.

The merger came in the late 1990s when Kia declared bankruptcy at the height of the Asian financial crisis. At this point, Hyundai stepped in and purchased a controlling interest in Kia Motors and by 1998, the deal was done and the ink dry.

Since then, the Kia brand has joined Hyundai Motor Company subsidiaries including brands such as Genesis and the Ioniq electric vehicle sub-brand.

So, does Hyundai own Kia outright? No, the former owns about a third of the latter, but still enough to call the shots.

That being the case, who owns Hyundai, then? Hyundai is a publicly listed company on the South Korean stock exchange so, technically, it’s owned by its shareholders. As a result, that’s who owns Kia, too.

And is Hyundai Korean? Yes, well, South Korean to be precise, but the Hyundai origin country is the same as Kia’s birthplace.
