I believe that the Toyota will have to be substantially better than the Maverick in order for Maverick owners to switch because the vast majority of Maverick owners are happy with their truck. And the Maverick will probably be due for its first major refresh around the time the Toyota is truly ready or shortly thereafter. The new Toyota probably won't dethrone the Maverick. However I do expect the Toyota to be stiffer competition than Santa Cruz.
It won't win over the sync 4 haters probably, since I see in promos for the 2026 Rav4 that their system looks like a lightly reskinned sync 4 now

Toyota probably won't be developing any new models for a couple years now, the F35A V6 in Tundra, Highlander is the beginning of a shit storm, an official recall is inevitable it's spun main bearings & Toyota is still claiming "machining debris" but the engine replacements are now going out to 2023, it's looking more & more like either a bad engine block design, engine block or crankshaft flexing from the forced induction loads.

I just watched a teardown video of one of these engines failed at 38000 miles, everything clean & polished machining no metallic sparkles or scrapes, crankshaft piston rod bearing journals pristine no wear, front crankshaft main bearing perfect, while crank rear main either the block or crankshaft flexed so much, the main bearing spun & welded itself to its crankshaft journal.

Already getting cases where the replacement engine failed faster than the original.

Probably smart to stay away from anything Toyota & forced induction, until the design engineering get up to speed. Except Tundra hybrids with F35A are starting to fail too.

No way Toyota would be putting the V6 turbo engine in a unibody truck away, they'd like use the same engine/powertrain options as the RAV4.

I have my doubts that a Maverick competitor is coming from Toyota, if the stories out of Japan about the EV Land Cruiser Sport based unibody truck are true (Toyota showed the concept of this truck back in 2023 at an auto show). It's larger than the Maverick, and would cost a lot more.

Agree. Maverick has been public knowledge for over half a decade now. If they wanted to respond, they would have already.

Only response I have noted lately is a "Meh, our product cycles are 10 years now, not like the peasant cars."

That's Toyotaese for "If the idiots keep buying existing models and complain about upgrades why would we bother?"

I see in your signature you have a Dyna! Tri-cab? Dual wheels and some were 4WD or not? You don't need to haul anything in that little Maverick, You have a big boy truck! I have never seen a Dyna or known anyone who has one. Had heard of them before though.

I've just got a double cab but the triples are wild, I got to ride in one and it felt like being in a 1980's cargo van; very hollow and echo-ey.
My truck is a single rear wheel 2wd, rated for 1.25 tons and it'll haul it but you better be patient... it's got a pretty wimpy 85hp forklift engine and a 4+1 transmission with crawler first. You can get up to about 50-60mph but highway driving is an adventure that involves a lot of foot to the floor and hoping there's no headwind or hills.
Visibility is amazing and it's a ton of fun to drive but it does ride like a big boy truck, when it's empty it kicks like a mule over rail crossings, speed bumps, tar lines, cracks or pretty much anything.

Cool! Looked them up on internet (again). Can't imagine the tri cab full of people if it would be struggling! Pretty popular overseas it seems.
