When I got my 25 Lariat AWD it seems my dealer had more important things than how to explain things to an "old fart" . Mostly it was trial and error I know about 20% of what options the computer, car, thinks I should know.

One of the things that pissed me off was the elimination of the CD drive, while I travel I always listened to "books on tape". After trial and many errors I figured out that I can copy the CDs onto my Mac computer, one at a time, to an empty folder than change the names of the files to something simple like if the "BOT" has 12 disks I list the file as 01 (disk # 1 than each file on that disk with an alphabet A. It should look like this disk 1 file (1 0A) through disk 12 file 13 (12M).

Once you have all the disk files renamed. Save it to the music program on the Mac. highlight all the files you entered, Go to the "file" tab in the top line drop down to the "convert" sub menu and select "Create an AAC Version". after that you will have two of each file names. Highlight only the files that do not ens in AAC and delete only those files. you will now have your "BOT" files ready to copy on a flash drive and play on a USB A or the USB C. One last thing is to make sure that your flash drive is formatted as a "FAT32" , Ex Fat or MS-DOS (FAT)

Check with your local library. Many now have access to apps for your phone where you can check out and download to your phone "books on CD". My library system uses one called "Libby". I've always had long commutes so I used to listen to books on cassette tape, then books on CD, then I used to rip them to USB sticks like you are doing and now finally for the past bunch of years been using this app. It has been the most useful by far and I've listened to many 100's of books with it.

You should be able to eliminate part of this process- instead of copying the files to a folder first, open the Music program, open Settings/Files/Import settings, change to "import using MP3 (or AAC) encoder" and "automatic"; then import the CD.

It should import with sensible, sequential filenames- not sure how it will handle multi-disc sets but the renaming should be reduced at least, if not eliminated. Then drop those files (which are already MP3s) onto your USB drive...

I have an Audible subscription, because I got tired of messing with the USB stick. My phone connects via BT and off I go. The only problem I have is when my wife takes the Mav and my book starts in my pocket until she gets out of range. I really need to add her phone to the truck so it will stop.

Relating my own experience, I had downloaded a digital book from the library using their Overdrive application (no longer available, replaced by Libby.) The audio book, Holly, by Steven King, had around 13 chapters, each chapter had about 15 mp3 files. A total of around 188 mp3s. I stripped the titles, and did the sequential numbering 001-188, and copied to a thumb. Yeah, too much work, but I had to see it through.

While it would make sense that the truck would index the drive so that file 001 would start he book, it didn't. This is when I learned about mp3 tags, and that you had to strip the tag information, because the truck uses them to prioritize the playing order.

In case you're trying to do what I did, you need a utility called Mp3tag to bulk process the files. But after all that work, learning experience, Audible looks like a good option, pricey, but hassle free.

There's also this free audiobook download and streaming site...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibriVox

Which has crowdsourced recordings of classic and public domain works. They also have an app. I think it lets you pre-download on wifi in the app to spare your data. Quality is a bit variable, but it's only as bad as your gradeschool teacher reading stories mostly.

I don't know why but ripping and converting CD always seems like a total bitch on Windows 10, though I had a preinstalled application on one machine medialink espresso which is helpful. But usually I find it more convenient to fire up an older Windows 7 install for the purpose and use the windows features to do it.

I'm reading a lot of work to convert music on this thread. You can use ITunes or better yet MEDIA Monkey to download music to their file system which will, in most cases assign album art as well as file names. Then put the music file on a thumb drive and your done.

I spent hours on converting 200 albums from analog to wave files. This saved the full copy of them before making second copies of MP3's. When you convert to MP3 you lose a huge percentage of fidelity, removing sound to shrink the file down. Anyway, I then added album art to both wave and MP3 files. Now my audio devices show the album art while playing.

I think many are doing way to much work for existing playable MP3 and MP4 files.
I have up to 1000 files on a usb drive that have all info which you can look up on the Infotainment system or any player by composer, artist, genre, album or random play by song name in alphabetical order. I also did CDs the same way, which was much easier.
Again converted MP3 or MP4 files have terrible fidelity which most don’t care about. The difference is like comparing headphones to the best actual full range speakers with a good amp. Live verse in a closet on a tablet.

Libby plus a free library card is great. If you're impatient then an Audible membership is awesome. Finally, Amazon music unlimited comes with one Audible book per month free.

I installed one shortly after getting my Maverick, still working good, search this site for more info, a number of us have installed one of these, mine is USB connected.

OP,
Not sure if Amazon still does the following, in addition to the above free sampler.

When I did convert some CD tracks to MP3's for use elsewhere, somewhere in the process I included them in the Amazon player indexing - and Amazon emailed me saying since it could confirm I owned those disc's - it was making them available for streaming or downloading the other songs in MP3, instead of converting.

Later after buying some CD's from Amazon (yes a ways back) - they auto-included them in my Amazon streaming list in my account. Maybe I did put them in the computer first, let Amazon player see them, then they were added - don't recall, over 10 yrs ago at this point, and uninstalled the Amazon player from prior phone.
