Back In the day if you didn’t put the heat to the pistons now and then you’d build up carbon deposits on top of the pistons and around the valve seats.
One of the reasons I only get an average of 27 mpg’s is I regularly get on it.
Say several hard powerful spool ups. I get some high RPM’s in there by putting it in low and exploring the upper third of the tachometer.
Think sport mode while actually hauling ass.
Putting it in low keeps me from having to go 95-110 mph.
My engine loves 4,000 to 5,000 rpm.
I like to let it breathe now and then.
Good thing you have a K&N drop-in air filter to really let it breathe at that high RPM Cherokee, 🤣🤭. J/K!

The theory is higher cylinder pressures help burn off carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. Plus it gets the turbo spinnin' like wwwweeeeeeeeeeee!
And these deposits go out the exhaust pipe?

I worked at an auto repair shop way back in the 80-90's and I was told a story that this thread reminds me of.

A customer had his Chevy truck tuned up and wasn't happy with the way it ran when the job was done and decided the best course of action was to pull up to the front of the shop and floor the gas pedal.

Apparently he wanted to blow his engine up and make the shop buy him a new one. Not sure how that was supposed to work but the guy was pissed and probably not thinking things out. So he sat there with the truck screaming for a few minutes. With it not exploding as hoped for, he gave up and drove away.

It was said that after doing this his truck was running much better and that was the end of his anger at our shop.

Good question,
I would think that the catalytic converter catches some of it and burns it away first.
It’s just carbon right ? Mostly, not sure.
Someone in here should know that. Or I could look it up.
SKYNET knows everything right ?

Does nothing for a fuel injected modern engine.
Yeah but it’s a good excuse to actually drive the little 2.0L engine in its sweet spot.

So can you explain how a modern EFI engine keeps from building up carbon on piston heads ?
I don’t know.

I believed in this on older carburetor equipped vehicles. Non computer cars had no automatic adjustments on the air to fuel ratio and often performance stuff idled rich. It helped to clean the plugs and carbon deposits.

All the above really! It's fun to "clear it out" every once in a while. Pretty much on a weekly basis for me.

In theory it's supposed to help clean out the pistons and valves, hence the phrase "I'm gonna go burn some carbon off the valves."

Have to do this on carbed 2-stroke machines like my snowmobile. It'll load up if you idle it for too long or run at low RPMs for an extended period of time. Need to get into the throttle to clear it out.
