A friend has a nephew that bought a new Subaru WRX with a manual 6-speed a few years ago. He's a younger guy with fast reflexes but still can't keep up with the CVT WRX's. By the time he's in 2nd gear the auto is already pulling away, staying in the sweet spot of it's max power band, and he can't catch up.

I grew up driving a stick shift and never minded it, even enjoyed it at times like many and can see a vintage sports car club enjoying a group drive through winding hills away from the crowds. But get into stop and go traffic (which is more often than not if you live near civilization) and tell me how much you enjoy driving a stick. Face it, it's old, inefficient, outdated tech and I let go of the BS mystique around it long ago.

Just got back from a 250 mile round trip ride.
My 2024 AWD Ecoboost Lariat is one year in my possession in seven days and is just recently fully broken in with 12,700 miles on the clock.

Are you guys sitting down ?

Rolling hills, one gorge full of twisties. About 75% of the ride at 65-75 mph with some elevation change mixed in.
Three sections of 85-90 mph, each about five miles long.
Hey, I was keeping up with traffic.

I started at 1950 feet above sea level, finished at 3,100 feet then back.

TWO very hard and fast Italian tuned ups, about five miles each.

With the above mentioned hauling ass my trip fuel average was 31.3 mpg’s. Thats with the 4,500 to 5,500 rpm tune up runs AND the 85-90 mph sections.

I'm very happy,

I will say even though my stock Michelin primacy tires were at 38 psi hot the tires had to work to manage the sweeping turns at 75 mph.
I needed a bit more tire.

At the trips end I finally broke the 500 mile range mark.
I refilled and it showed me a respectable 517 mile range.

This Ecoboost on its full synthetic oil is now fully broken in and delivers its power so smoothly it’s almost unbelievable.

The Eight speed transmission is fantasticly smooth and accurate.

Here is the part you guys will call Bullshit on,
Twice I saw my mpg’s climb above 31 while I was doing 85-90.
The Ecoboost gets plenty of air and IMHO a so called cold air intake is just under the hood eye candy and an absolute waste of money.

Got an Ecoboost ?
Remember to drive it like you stole it now and then.
Zoom Zoom

A Warning to the fast boys.

I could feel the first signs of my Mavericks suspension and tires approaching its performance limits as I passed 90 mph.
On a straight away no problem.
I was not on a straight away. I was in high speed sweepers.
The boat float feeling was trying to be noticeable.
Yes the mpg gauge read out can show high mpg's. Remeber that is just at that moment. If you check after filling up that is the true milage. My hybrid at times reads anywhere between 23-99 mpg. Calculated mpg after refilling is 46 mpg. The lowest so far was 35 mpg because on a trip I was driving 70-75 mph. Typically my mpg is 43 mpg.

After that trip I checked the old fashion way. It matched my trip meter and my average and agreed with the tank distance to empty.

Seems my mpg gage read out got pretty accurate after 5,000 miles.
I’m sure that my mpg gage will not be accurate after/if/when I disconnect the battery.

So a few of you are saying you never even had the ā€œMaverick wideā€ dreaded camera recall? WOW!
I never took myine in for the camera recall. I had my entertainment system freeze once listening to a usb stick. Turned it off and on and it worked again. No camera freeze up yet.

You saying you got over 31 mpg on that tankfull driving uo to 90 mph with 4500-5000 rpms? I can see the current mpg saying over 31 mpg. I only care about my hand calculated mpgs when I refill at the pump.

I was only at those high speeds for a total of 20 miles. Twice during that the average mpg climbed a couple of tenths.

The Turbo 2.0 Liter loves to breathe.

Pussy footing along at 60 will deliver 30 plus and cruising at 85-90 will also delivery 30 plus.
An extra 1,000 RPM burns a bit more fuel but with the added boost of the turbo at those higher RPM’s and the fact that I’m covering more ground/ distance per minute, follow me ?
the 2.0L is very efficient.

It’s a different animal entirely.
Not to be compared to the Hybrid in any way.

I just completed a roughly 750 mile trip from Columbus, OH to Chicago and back.

With the cab loaded up with a family of 5 and luggage for the weekend the hybrid averaged…..

A really pathetic 23.5mpg.

That’s with the 235 Wildpeak AT Trails filled to 35psi cold and running 7-9 miles above the posted speed limit.
I have a 23 Hybrid. I took mine to Iowa and was going 70-75 mph and my worst milage was 34-35 mpg. I run 235/65/17 General Grabber HTS tires.

Id love to see some trip screens that show your average speed above 60mph getting that fuel economy.

Ive never been able to top 30 on the highway. Not even with the trash 225 territory HTs

I am talking hand calculated mpg. I check my mpgs every time I refuel. Most of the Iowa vacation was highway. Only some in town by the hotel and some in town and secondary roads in Knoxville and Oskaloosa.

That seems low. No screen shots but in early Sep I took a circuitous 1400 mile highway trip running 65-75mph and averaged 35mpg. Wonder if it's your tires. I have the stock Continentals that came on my 2025 at 35-36psi. Some don't seem to like the Conti's much but they've been just fine for me.

The 235 Wildpeak Trail ATs are definitely hurting my MPGs overall. I’d say as much as a 15-20% hit but I find it a worthy trade off in the city at least.

You are 100% right but I don't race anybody and live in Vermont and drive through winding hills away from crowds 8 months a year. The valley I live in has no stop lights.

Now the other 4 months in NC the stop and go would not be so much fun I agree!

I guess I just like to drive and miss winding through the gears.

What’s a game controller? Is my Mav supposed to have one? šŸ˜‰
Mav doesn’t have one…yet.
Might trickle down someday from the Ford/Redbull F1? Probably an ā€œItalian Tuneupā€ 15,000rpm button on there somewhere…

I don’t know, that submersible heading down to the Titanic was operated by a joystick game controller before it went kaboom! šŸ’„
