Is there any way of telling if and when an AGM battery needs to be desulphated? And when going through the process, any idea how long you need to do this for, 1/2 hr, 1 hr? Merci.

There's no way of telling other than decreased performance and increased internal resistance. If you're to that point, you likely won't be able to recover it completely.

I've been using a smart 4 amp desulphating charger for many years now, and follow a regimen of about one overnight charge per month except in winter, when I double that to about once every couple of weeks. Sometimes in the coldest part of winter I just leave it on the charger whenever I'm not driving it. Typical battery lifetime for me is 8-10 years.

In conjunction with that, I use a Solar BA-7 tester occasionally to check battery capacity (CCA). Below is the newest version of the tester. In my experience, these do better at detecting internal resistance than an older load tester.

Upt to 20 hours to fully charge could be longer if battery soc less than 75%. Then depending on sulphation up to 72 hours. My noco g5 will indicate when completed. I would recommend running every 3-4 months so it doesn't take as long and won't get as heavily sulphated .

Thanks Terry and James. I just bought a 4 amp smart charger ( noco ) , so hopefully that’ll do the trick. Can always tell when bat is not up to good charge cause the AS/S doesn’t work, not that I use it anyway, just to test bat condition. 😉

I use my 1 amp desulfating charger on my AGM battery about every month.....it usually takes about 24 to 72 hours for a complete operation....but again I use a 1 amp charger.... i believe that a slow charge is the best way to go if you can do without the vehicle for a few days...

A smart charger will select appropriate current and reduce current to slow charge as charging nears completion, so there's no advantage to using one with low peak current output over one with a higher peak current output. Desulfating smart chargers will only produce desulfating pulses once full charge is reached, so they can be left connected indefinitely.

If you run a desulfation cycle, just remember to disconnect the battery before doing it. The electronics are built to run at 12-14V, not the potentially-damaging 18V surges that desulfation uses.
That depends on your desulphator's strategy. With the PulseTech charger I use, the electrical system never sees voltage higher than 14V. They state this in their manuals, and I've scoped the voltages throughout the stages. The pulses are "absorbed" by the load of the battery and the electrical system doesn't "see" them.

The automatic desulfation cycle for my noco g5 is safe to run while battery is attached to vehicle. The hybrid maverick DCDC converter regularly puts 15.6 volt onto the bus (possibly up to 16?) and there will be a figure higher than that designed into the maverick. The noco has a "recovery" cycle that has much higher voltage and requires that battery be removed for that. The recovery cycle needs to be done in a safety area, just in case!

This is a good point to bring up. My charger only uses "maintenance" desulfating cycles as it charges and goes into maintenance mode. It does not have a "recovery" cycle mode.

My opinion is these things are snake oil, though I did get one for my bike over winters, which is now on my generator. They cost no more than another charger, so sure, I'll bite.

I don’t know “Dude”, mine was not expensive at all, think around $100.00 Canadian.

My genius 5 noco was $50-$60 and my genius 10 amp was about $125. Both had a discount. I use them pretty much most of time. I have put my g5 on a 12v agm that was flat less than 2 volts on my Polaris ranger. Took the g5 about six weeks to charge and optimize the small agm. It now nearly five years old and still working. It does see the g5 about 3 times a year. They are great but you do have to use them.
