So I've only had my 2025 FWD Hybrid XLT for about 2 weeks and right at 500 miles. Im only getting 31 mpg no where near the stated MPG it sould be getting or what others have posted about on here. I do live in Florida and it is hot but not sure it should affect it that much. All miles have been around town, no long road trips most time in the car so far at one time is about an hour. I keep it in Normal mode and i dont have a lead foot. So is it my truck? Does it need more break in time? Or am I just overthinking it?

Normal for using A/C continuously on a high setting.

You and the truck will get better with time. You will learn what raises and lowers the MPG.

A gas only car would be worse.

Simply too early to draw any conclusions from 500 miles.

However - you say that you don't have a lead foot and most driving has been in town trips but your electric miles are less than 30% of your total miles.

Not a great example because I just filled up but since spring (warmer weather) I have aimed to keep my electric miles at 50% or above of the total miles driven and when I do that - I am generally returning 40+mpg on the computer (upper 30s hand calculated).

Even with significant highway miles (coach club soccer and travel A LOT, and two trips to my mountain property in NC) I am still at 33% electric miles.

Ford Maverick New 2025 FWD Hybrid MPG Question IMG_0159

Definitely the slowest I've ever driven a vehicle both accelerating and at cruising speed. It really does matter. My actual hand calculated MPG is well below the combined 37mpg rating but I try to remind myself I have a truck that can tow 4,000lbs with a payload just under 1,400 and I'm still pulling 33mpg? Not. Too. Shabby.

EDIT: In the summer it also serves as an air conditioned respite for my dogs down at my mountain property. I estimate my Maverick has “idled” for roughly 12-15 hours to keep them cool.

Only about 30% EV use on your total miles so far.

That's not great - but your drives may not allow much better.
Though avg 22 MPH would seem to be in a good range - so not like mainly highway miles.
(unless you have some decent time on the counter just sitting waiting for people, and avg is much faster)

Florida in summer - I'm sure you've got AC on as commented above.
Break-in period - sure.

You say not a lead foot - but I've heard that from friends who most definitely would race away from every stop sign or front of stop light line until the fast stop for the next red light/stop sign.
So that effect would be ICE constantly on until final braking to stop, which didn't get much regen because into the physical brakes. And not a way to get good ICE mpg either.

Or....

Are you attempting to keep in EV mode on every acceleration from a stop (hopefully not on busy streets ticking drivers off behind you), and by the time up to speed the HVB is down so low the ICE now needs to run to recharge it when HVB could be powering you, or worse the timing is such the ICE is running at the stops to recharge what was used?

Your better MPG is not going to be had slowly accelerating over minor distance draining the HVB, but rather getting on up to speed, and now that the power needed to remain at speed is lower the EV can do it for longer distances.

Now - even with that, I've driven some routes, like urban streets tons of stop signs busy traffic.
Nothing like your only EV usage is the short coast down from 20 to the next stop in 1 or 2 short blocks. Then you are playing the ICE good mileage game too with slower accel's that don't get your back end hit by impatient cross traffic.

Also - that truck estimate of MPG is not correct - need to do math with the pump figures.
Sadly, the estimate is usually over-inflated, you are likely lower than 31 MPG.
Since each tank is going to last awhile - improve your tank to tank measurement accuracy - level surface, pump that's not popping off due to too fast flow, stopping at 1 or 2 clicks depending on how sensitive they are.
(to everyone about to jump on that - there is a decent range between 1 click and topping off to overflow, if you listen you can tell the difference and sometimes 1 click is too early)

Mileage also depends on the length of your trips. Under 6 miles round trip and the ice is always warming up and mileage is quite low. Topography of the area and traffic flow also affect mileage.

My 2025 Hybrid AWD just turned 3000k miles. There are some town trips that I get 32-36 mpg... and some I get up to 42-44.... a lot depends on terrain, traffic, etc. When I go on a long road trip that is all interstate, I am getting 32-34. These hybrids are reverse of what you are used to.... they're made for town and city trips. I tend to look at my mileage trip by trip.... it pops up if you turn off the truck and the door is still closed. It won't do it if you open the door too fast. If you just go by the Trip 1 or Trip 2, that will average everything out until you reset. You may have a lot of town trips, but if you have some interstate driving at 70-75, that's gonna bring your overall average down.

I saw a YouTube video of a guy testing his new maverick on a 100 mile Denver loop and then he repeated it at 4000 miles... the mpg was significantly better the second time. I think he mentioned that he even contacted Ford about it and they said you need 4-5k miles break-in period.

I would suggest using the EV Coach for awhile and the power gauge (option you can turn on that shows up on the left of the speed... forgot the technical name)... and the brake coach. I've learned a lot about the driving style of a hybrid... especially when it comes to going down a hill and braking. It's almost a game for me now to see if I can "reclaim" 100% of the energy from braking and stopping.

I have played around just a little with the driving modes..... I seem to get just as good mileage in Normal as I do in ECO.... but I haven't experiment too much with that.

It gets better as it wears in. My numbers, including about 3000 miles of heavy towing:

In addition to many of the comments above, the flat terrain in your area does not help. The hybrid really does benefit from rolling hills allowing coasting/Regen braking. Your many shorter trips where the A/C must cool the cab all over again also does not help. The same stuff is true (except the regen braking) for ice vehicles too, but few people really pay much attention on those.

Especially in winter.

In summer currently - takes about 20-30 seconds for the catalyst temp to reach 1000 at the idle rpm used while traction motor provides the power.
And then ICE is ready to be actually used for power, but at that point if I'm at a speed it's not required - I'm back in EV mode. All within the space of a few blocks.
More than 6 miles not required if the temp is right.

Ditto to topo.

Sadly, the estimate is usually over-inflated, you are likely lower than 31 MPG.
My Prius v was the same way, 2 mpg inflated. However, the Mav you can adjust that through the Engineering Test Mode. Now I don't need to do any more hand math since it's certainly close enough (I sometimes hand calculate slightly above indicated, and sometimes slightly below indicated ... so on average about right).

You might have the highest mileage 2025!
I'm up to about 36.5 mpg average at a bit under 6000 miles now. It was 38 mpg until I took a couple of highway trips (60-70+ mph) with kayaks sitting on top. I took a bit hit after 500 miles of averaging only about 27 mpg lol. But, 27 mpg at highway speed in a truck with multiple kayaks sitting above the roofline is still quite impressive in my opinion.

Now that was a total "DUH" moment for me lol. I read your message real quick, and I read "highest mileage" as "highest mpg". That's what I get for rushing through the thread & rushing through my reply. Whoops .... good thing I can save face by hiding behind a computer screen lol.

I have a newer hybrid Lariat all wheel drive. The driving is up and down hills and mostly 55mph. The A/C is always on. The first 300-500 miles I was disappointed. During this time I was getting about the same as you are now, and I'm a very conservative driver. But now, after 700 miles, I'm getting around 41.2 mph on the gauge behind the steering wheel. So, keep the faith!!!!
