Auto locking door when not in truck

Im old school so I called it a lock button. But yes that black lever behind the inside door handle

No....He got it "right"...or should I say correct...LOL. He understood which one it was.

Maybe if they used the door handle instead of the lock release to open the door. I guess that is why I haven't done this accidentally.

nope…. you are incorrect. You cannot open the door with the lock button. Just not possible. everyone is just hitting it because their hand is big and the design is tight

See the black thing in the photo? The long part is the unlatch handle. The short part is the manual lock/unlock. The door handle is the part with the orange or blue backside.
Door handle is the part with the window buttons on it as pictured below. It is designed to open and close the door. The latch is not. People are pushing the door open at the latch and locking the door.

Huh?? . Think….that’s HOW they get out of their truck. It’s not opening if you don’t pull the little door “handle”. You do realize the accidental “push” is happening in the original “pull”…. no matter what part they use to open the door.

Semantics... A door handle and a door latch handle are two different things. Some people call the handle a grab handle. That's a couple of alternative ways to describe them without confusing them by just saying "handle".

I've owned cars with this door latch/lock lever setup for 25 years and, after reading about this issue here many times, wondered why this has never happened to me. So I paid attention to how I was operating the door and found that I pull the latch and simultaneously push the door open with my forearm/elbow. Those that have difficulty with this accidental locking might want to try that method, and if it works for you, train a new habit.

I pull the black "handle" to unlatch the door, I then push the door open at the grab handle not by using my palm pushing in the latch handle area. If it is happening in the original pull then it would happen every time they attempt to open the door. I would think if the people having the issue paid attention they would realize where they put their hand to open the door is the problem. If your hand is pushing the manual lock at the same time as the original pull it will not unlock, tried it. So you have to unlock and unlatch then push the manual lock which I did by pushing with the latch handle. I like the elbow suggestion TBONE made. It is user error no matter how you slice the watermelon.

Oh yeah, no doubt it’s user error. It’s happened to me a few times over my first year, but just a handful of times…. even knowing that it can. The thing to remember on this is that most of the people driving the Maverick have other cars and trucks that they drive. (Spouses, kids, etc.) and it doesn’t happen on those so that’s where it surprises them I think.

Those that have difficulty with this accidental locking might want to try that method, and if it works for you, train a new habit.

But it's so much easier to blame Ford!
