Yeah I saw some campgrounds charging $75 a night now, Wat???? So Motels could potentially be cheaper in some situations.

However, to cheapskate it and do overnights through Harvest Hosts or the allowed spots at Bass Pro, you need something that doesn't require set up and is self contained, which would lead toward the Prolites and the Casitas, which are a bit spendy.

Gotta look up every single damn trailer though, some have models like "Featherweight ultra super megalight 15ft" and you think, that sounds promising, then find it's 3800 empty with 4400 gvwr and advertised as "half ton towable" ... umm, if this thing was built in 1980 it would be about that in pounds, and that would be NORMAL weight for trailer of that size. I think they build them out of lead and particle board. A good illustration of that, is made to order manufacturers that build in actual trad manner for pre 1990, and get pre 1990 weights in their current models. Taylor Craft is one. I believe there's a year wait (order it and the mav at the same time lol )

Another travel trailer brand to consider is Scamp. They have models that weigh under 2000 pounds.

Although I have a Transit 250 (not a Connect...) that I set up as a campervan to go...camping, I've toyed with the idea of the Maverick for camp/road trips due to it getting 45mpg instead of 15. Cuz I'm double cheap.
I don't really like towing because of maneuverability and other limitations driving, but having a trailer is great if you're at the same spot for a week+ and can just detach and drive around and come back to it.
I've decided that a rooftop tent is the way to go in the Maverick. It doesn't limit your drivability in any way, and provides adequate space and comfort for sleeping. And there's enough room in the bed and backseat for camp gear and supplies. Also, I don't have to worry about camp raiders when gone because the whole camp comes with me. I have not purchased one yet, but may do so when the need arises.

However, the Scamp and Burro are good choices for a light trailer. I'll have to look it up, but I think the Taxa Cricket is under a ton. I think Scamp makes a 5th wheel, and that might be ideal for the Maverick. You can go a little heavier due to the position of load.

Note: I do not stay in organized campgrounds unless there is no other option. People suck, and campgrounds just squeeze sucky people closer together, and you have thinner walls than home. I "bushwhack", use "dispersed camping". Of course, I'm on the West coast, where public land is abundant and you can almost always find a postcard perfect place to bushwhack with no one in sight on public land. I'd rather just crash at a rest area for free than pay $ to stay in a campground with exactly the same experience.

Also, due to the trophy fake-wife, we are required to stay in a motel or more likely Air BnB every 3-4 days. Motel 6 is about $100+ now in my experience, no longer $6. I hear that Super 8 is also no longer $8. Besides, those do not meet the trophy's standards.

Awesome, get out there and have FUN. Just be reasonable, know the limits. Be safe and make memories. In addition to the weight of all that's relative, also remember:

FRONTAL AREA LIMITATION
Frontal Area is the total area in square feet that a moving
vehicle and trailer exposes to air resistance.
The maximum trailer frontal area that must be considered
for a Maverick/trailer combination is 29 sq. ft. without 4K
Tow Package (53Q) and 40 sq. ft. with 4K Tow Package
(53Q). Exceeding this limitation may significantly reduce the
performance of your towing vehicle

You can pull a little more. 3,000 lbs. is pretty comfortable with considerations.

Consider adding a trailer brake controller. ( $100 - $250 ) Required in many states

Consider driving under 65 MPH. Always.

Consider adding an OBDII data reader to your dash, so you can actually see the numerical temperatures of the engine, transmission, electric motor, generator, and battery.

Consider air assist bags inside your coil springs or other suspension improvements.

Consider a weight distribution hitch.
(controversial if it helps or hurts but a few people have done it)

I've looked at tons of travel trailers.
The options go up significantly in the 2500-3000 lb range.

If you add additional hardware and are a conservative driver, the truck will do it and do it well.

MPG will be 18 but I digress....

article is a little dated but maybe a starting point? (i'm not a camper person so have no clue, but the inlaws were into it for many years, before age creped into the picture)

21 Best Travel Trailers Under 2500 lbs and 2000 lbs
Great article thanks. Surprised it didn't mention that Airstream Basecamp as "influential" in that it influenced others to not keep their small trailers under 20k and double the prices
